I just checked with a dealer about new shocks on my 96 coupe. They said there are struts on the front and shock on ther rear and it would cost $1600 to have them replaced. I then talked to an independent repair shop and was quoted $430 for shocks. I can't tell a shock from a strut. Does anyone know what they really have?

Thanks,

Jim

Shocks front and rear.

This dealer guy doesn't have a clue if he thinks there are struts on a Vette.

When you raise the hood and look at the front suspension, you'll see an upper and lower control arm - "A" shaped - holding the spindle (upright) inside the wheel. Between them and closer to the motor, you will see the tube shock - usually yellow if original.

Now, if your Vette has the adjustable suspension (F45 Real Time Damping), then you're looking at more money. I'm assuming that you have a standard or Z51 suspension 96 (no switches on the console). Either way, the shocks are easy to replace and you can find many brands to choose from. Check out the Mid America Motorworks catalog or www.mamotorworks.com for prices and brands.

Run as fast as you can from that dealer and toss a gernade behind you just in case.

You can also look at http://www.bilstein.com/ shocks are almost as easy to change as a tire. 430 is a good price is you get a good shock for your money.

I get in big arguments with my friends about my car having gas shocks all the way around, I love how people who know nothing about these cars think they know more then me. Not that I know a lot anyway.

There are no struts on the Corvette, just shocks. Are you sure you want to pay someone to do it, it is easily done at home with simple hand tools. I bought four new shocks from tirerack.com for $120 and installed them myself in about an hour. Best purchase I ever made for my car.

Bull! Turn him in to somebody in charge of auto repair in your state. Someone that stupid shouldn't be allowed to work on cars, or even bicycles! :hb

dealer? chevy dealer?

which dealer told you 1600 bucks and that you had struts on front?

I ask because I want to make freaking absolutely sure I don't ever go there.

Sneaky so and so.... what a total blatant con job they were trying to pull on you. This is what I mean when I say there is no regulatory body to control these crooks and they are free to cheat anybody they can.

It is only on these pages that we have recourse against them by warning each other about crooks like these.

1600 bucks is unbelievable and I agree with whomever said to report those guys to whoever you can in your state. And make sure you let people know who they are so we can stay away from that dealership.

I know first hand how corrupt they are because a good friend of mine is the son of a dealership owner. He confided in me something about the scams they pull off on unsuspecting customers. That is why I never ever go to a dealership. I also have managed to find out how certain repair shops make money by telling customers they need, for instance, a new alternator. They then take the alternator off, clean it up or switch it for one off their used parts shelf, and then!, they sell the good alternator back to a parts guy who drives from shop to shop in his truck collecting good and bad parts.

You must be very watchful and make sure you can trust your mechanic. I had somebody I trusted totally try to rip me off, ironically for an alternator that of course I knew was perfectly fine, and that told me I had placed my trust in the wrong place. So, I sold my complicated newer cars and went back to my old trustworthy, value keeping, corvettes, which I know a little bit about, enough to fix this and that and keep myself out of the greedy hands of unscrupulous shops.

Honestly, I don't even want to take my car to a paint shop, fearful of what damage they will do to my car out of spite or maliciousness. I've had too many bad experiences, I don't trust any of them anymore.

Good luck with your 96. I hope you find a good mechanic, but seriously, shocks are about the easiest job on your car that there is. I'd just do them myself. Takes less than an hour for front and less than that for the rear.

TK, ummm, practicing your "Thread Resurrection" powers? This thread hasn't been touched/active in almost 5 years. :chuckle

As others have stated, there are no "struts" as in "MacPherson Strut" Suspensions, on a C4, but it just might be poor nomenclature.

As for the price 1600 bucks is about right if the car has F45 "Real Time Damping".

If the car has base shocks or Z51 Bilsteins then the 430 price seems right.
