Stock Mufflers with x-pipe

1994 Convertible, I'm thinking of replacing the resonator with a x-pipe, while keeping the rest of the exhaust stock. The reason for doing this is a rattle from inside the resonator. I have searched the forums for information what kind of sound this will produce, without success. The stock system is to quite, I don't mind a louder system, but would hate to add drone:ohnoes to the car.

I eliminated the resonator as well. I wanted to be able to service the entire exhaust system myself, so I took a different approach. I purchased a cat-back exhaust from Super Natural Performance w/out mufflers. This allowed me to unbolt the entire cat-back factory exhaust. The new system came in three sections... from the cats there is a small section (with built-in "X") that mates to two straight pipes that replace the resonator. Two aft pipes, that are curved, come out of the straight pipes to mate up with your mufflers. I cut the OE mufflers off of the exhaust assembly that was removed. I left enough "material" on the OE mufflers, so I could expand (took it to a muffler shop) the end of the muffler to fit over the after-market exhaust and use a clamp to secure it.

Essentially, my exhaust is in four sections, but I can service it myself, if need be. There are no welds, only clamps, and I have yet to have any leaks. The sound is awesome, no drone at all. It still has the same OE tone, only slightly louder. While cruising, you can here a slight burble, but at WOT, it sounds louder (but not obnoxious) and respectable. I prefer it over the Corsa exhaust I had (that is another story in itself).

I'm gonna try and Video before and after so we can get an idea on the difference it makes.

No more rattle

The Rattle is gone :thumb:thumb, finally after replacing the resonator with a x-pipe yesterday, the car sounds as good, as it looks nice.

I had it replaced with a 2 1/2" stainless magnaflow x-pipe, some of you suggested a 3" x-pipe, but my muffler shop manager (who I know and trust) told med that it would only create a "larger but not louder" sound with a stock system.

Thanks!

my car has the muffler iliminators and resonator in place nice sound a little crackle and pop with the manual transmisson not obnoxious or over bearing sweet sound. highy reccomend once had and 81 with flowmasters and really made a lot of noise inside i guess resonance which i think the hatch back amplifies the condition

my setup isnt a stk muffler deal but it is quieter and makes more power, which boggles my mind . i have a 92 zr1 with headers no cats and a custom selfdesigned 23/4 in system .at the end of the system are 2 3 in walker super turbos. had a corsa on it before but didnt like the wot sound. car at fontana ran 12.74 @114.66mph with the corsa . with my new setup car has gone 12.23@117.232 mph. there a a couple of vids on utube under zeusone and ron de killer if you want to ck out the sound . on the freeway the only thing i hear is tire noise .

For those of you that are interested in what the inside of the resonator looks like.

When it starts to rust inside it is easy to understand that parts can get loose, however I could not locate the rattle as it only occurred when the exhaust system was hot.;shrug

If you want to make a lot of noise and reduce the power go with Flowmasters.

If you want to make less noise and more power go with Magnaflow

Here is a link to a site where professional engine builder post.
These guys have their own engine dyno and they make their living building high performance engines.

Read what dyno results show and what they have to say about mufflers.
If you search this site their are other threads about exhaust but bottom line is it has been proven that Flowmasters are the worlds worst muffler if you are interested in performance.
If you just want a lot of noise then you will like them.

Rattle found, was not in the resonator.

Eventually, by bending some of the heat shields I managed to hear the rattle when cold, and that made it easy to finally locate the rattle. It was the heat shield located on the left sise curved pipe after the cat, a welding was not tight, and as a temporary solution I clamped it with a hose clamp. Will fix it permanently next time the exhaust comes down.
