Hello, I am thinking of installing a supercharger on my 1997. My first searches that I have found have been very expensive... $7,000 plus installation.... Does any one have any suggestions on any brands etc. that are more cost effective????? Or any general thoughts on blower installation etc..... Thanks for your help.
If you are able to drop the car off for a couple of weeks to have the work done, the Chevrolet dealership in Jacksonville, Arkansas (just 15 minutes north of Little Rock) has a great Corvette mechanic working there. His name is John Sims. I talked to him about adding HP and he said he can put together a custom supercharger system that will add upwards of 150HP for about $5000 completed. By the way, he builds some baaaad Corvettes... 800+HP daily drivers. He built a C4 a few years ago and DROVE it cross country to the Viper shootout, slapped some slicks on it, beat everything there, picked up his trophy, threw street tires back on it and drove it back home. 25+MPG on the highway and I believe it 700+HP attached to the go peddle, and it is also a daily driver!
Forgot to mention, I believe all superchargers will require an aftermarket hood to clear. John's price is just for the supercharger and install and does not include the cost of a new hood.

You need to do some serious homework on this subject. There are several aftermarket suppliers of forced induction systems for the C5. Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) has a tremendous reputation with the installation of these systems and I am sure they can give you some advice. As far as requiring a new hood for the supercharger, this is only true in some applications such as the Roots type superchargers supplied by Magnacharger. There are other supercharger systems on the market that are more compact and do not require a replacement hood. These are made by Procharger and Vortec. You may also want to look into a twin turbo system as a possible alternative. Most of these systems are going to cost you b/w $8,000 - $10,000 installed. Most will require reporgramming your ECM and larger fuel injectors. Have Fun!
In the supercharger biz "cost effective" means "cheap" and cheap is not the way to go if driveability, reliability, durability and ability to pass emissions tests in states which have them are important.
There are NO FREE LUNCHES with blower systems.
If you're looking for a properly-developed supercharger package for a C5 and are intent upon having the installation done by a service facility or supercharger retailer, expect to pay between $5000 and $7000 for a turn-key installation.
You can save money if 1) you do the installation yourself and 2) are willing to compromise in one or all of driveability, reliability/durability and exhaust emissions.
You must pay to play. The best Procharger kits have been developed by A&A Corvette and East Coast Supercharging. They only use the ATI headunit with custom designed brackets, intercooolers, and piping. These do not need a new hood. The key to any sucessful FI application is competent dyno tuning. If the AF ratio leans out under boost, you will grenade the pistons and rings. You will also need to beef up the clutch and/or tranny to hold the new power. Good luck.
Magnusum non intercooled supercharger can be installed probably for seven grand...and on GP the vette doctors here in Long Island do an intercooled Mag w/ painted hood for 8 grand installed.
Thats the best pricing I've seen to date.
Spend 200 more and get the 36K / 3 year extended drivetrain warranty..
I beleive a new magnusum with that warranty (either intercooled or the less expensive non intercooled would be the way I would go)
Lingenfelter's deal is a slightly modified LS1 with Magnuson's blower kit.
While LPE does great work, I think you can jet just about the same performace for less if you buy Magnuson's kit for the C5, then add a basic head port/polish and a mild Crane cam. If your comfortable with 425-450hp, you can just bolt the Magnuson blower on a stock engine.
Don't cheap out, either. The intercooled Magnuson is the way to go. It makes more power and the driveability is better. Also, the intercooled Magnuson is the only one that's 50-state legal. The non-intercooled kit is not. Lastly, you have to change the hood on the car because a stock hood won't clear the blower. There are about half-a-dozen companies that make hoods for C5s w. Magnuson blowers.
I'm getting ready to do some upgrades and I recently talked to the folks at Lingenfelter. The two packages that interest me are the Magnuson intercooled supercharger @ 500 HP installed with the new hood painted to match ($10k). The second package is a rebuild of your existing motor (port, polish, cam, springs etc) @ and priced at $7K w/24,000 mile warrenty.
I'm probably going with the 430 HP version as it's easier to deal with for street driving, has plenty of HP and torque with less stress on the motor. I essentially end up with a C5 vert that's as fast as a C5 Z06. The best of both worlds.
