Suspected Drive Train Noise ;help

My wife recently purchased a used 2000 coupe still under warranty. After driving it a while, she noticed a noise coming from the rear under braking. :confused I drove the car (she let me!) and recreated a low rumbling noise (similar to grinding but different) under braking. I took the automatic transmission out of gear while braking and the noise was NOT evident, so I suspected that there was a problem in the drive train. :(

My wife took the car to a dealer for service and had them observe the noise and try to correct it. They replaced the alternator drive gear (I believe that's in the front, not the rear!) and eventually replaced the left muffler (??? and why not the right side if that was going to be the cause?), but the noise remained as loud as ever. :cry A Chevrolet engineer (don't know if he was C5 specialist) was at the dealership at the time and drove the car. He heard the noise but said that nothing could be done! :hb

They told my wife to call a Customer Service number. She did and got the expected runaround - they said they couldn't do anything and it would be up to the dealer to proceeed! :argue My wife is not going to leave this problem alone while the car is under warranty. When we take it to another dealer for service, what other areas should we have them look at? Universal joints? Transmission fluid? Alignment/tires? I'd appreciate any other suggestions anyone can provide. :BOW

Questions please

Hi there,
Ok, first, you state that the noise is NOT there when you are out of gear?????
Please check to see if you can duplicate the noise in every gear, 1,2,3,4, R.
Also, does the noise happen cold or hot??? Does temperature or driving time of the vehicle matter????
Is the noise there only when turning, or only when straight, or all the time?????
Does the noise change when you slightly pull up the e brake handle one or 3 clicks?????
Please answer these questions, and we can continue.

Trans Noise

I don't know if this helps, but the video that came with my 2002 mentions a drivetrain noise that you will hear every now and then. It says it is completely normal and is a consequence of the drivetrain design, i.e. the tunnel that runs along the middle of the car. Don't know if that is what you are hearing or not, the audio on the video reproduces the sound so you should check with your dealership and hear that sound and see.

rear noise-i know this sounds too easy but i have a similiar sound from the rear when i'm in gear and while i'm at a stop and start to let my foot off the brakes to ease forward to see around something but still keeping my foot on the brake-just brake grab?almost like a low groan or creaking---- good luck----

Have to say I have not heard this problem. Then again maybe it is because of the loud sqealing noise coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like the belt. Do I need to change the belt?

LR, I too have a 2000 Coupe. I had my exhaust switched to Corsa Indy's and shortly started hearing the noise you described. I would guess that the exaust bracket is get vibrations and causing the noise.
However, as was mentioned above, test to make triple-sure that you do not have a transmission problem.

Bearing noise

Have you figured out the noise? I have a 1998 w/ 40K that I just purchased that is making a similar noise. Only in gear and during acceleration. the faster I go the louser it gets. Not the brakes, sounds like a loud wheel bearing, but is not that. Seems that it may be drive shaft area?? Any help would be appreciated.

Take it to a Exhaust specialist, and let them look at your exhaust or muffler for rubbing. It may be rubbing or shifting under braking could be a bracket broke or loose.....Dr C5 Corvette
