i am having troubles [i think] with my torque converter clutch not engaging. I have just gone up and down the road one hundred times from 1st to 4th gear while selected in overdrive, and iam only counting the three shifts. rumor has it when the tcc locks up it should almost feel like another gear has just engaged. is there any easy way of checking this out? I do have the gm manuals, but haven't got around to looking in depth at them yet. from what i have seen, they say the clutch should engage at about 25 to 30 mph while selected in overdrive.
Also, i also think that my maf burn relay may not be working.
I have been told that you can hear it working if you are in a quiet
place when you turn off the car. CAN'T HEAR A THING. what way can you check this out? should this not set off the check engine light so you can get the code? any help on these two matters would be greatly appreciated.:confused :confused

There is a connector that goes to the tranny, located on the drivers side. You have to reach over the exhaust pipe. Make sure this has a good connection. If that does not do it ... I had to replace a small solenoid switch in the tranny. Remove the pan and follow the wires to the solenoid, which should be at the rear on the passengers side of the tranny. If this does not function you will never get to lock up. Good time to replace the filter while there. Almost any tranny shop will have the soleniod, cost is about 10.00 for the part. Or check the parts stores. Good luck...let us know who it turned out.

MAF relay

Wade,

I just replaced the MAF relay on my 88. It was occasionally setting a code. When it failed, it set a code on every start-up.
