TH350 to 700R4

well i have come into a caprise and am gona use its 700R4, the only major thing i will be needing to do is shorten the driveshaft correct? or will i have to do any other modifications? i have looked/searched around and found some sites but none with much of a conversion walkthrough, so it must be pretty strait forward...

You may find a difference in where and how the trans mounts,

If there is a differance in the size of the flywheel and tourque converter

How the trans cooler lines are run

dip stick location

700 r4 is an overdrive trans and needs a tourque converter lock up that works on vacum and is released with a brake pedal singnal also

700r4 uses a tv cable to control its shift points and passing gear whitch is different then a standard kick down lever

I changed my 350 to a 700 while i'm in a body off restoration.
So here is the list if you want to make it good without to much welding and cutting into original parts..

You'll need a 700 with it's torque converter (i have a 90 or 91 corvette 700R4 incl. converter.)
A 82 crossmember because the 700 is a bite longer.
TV cable relocator thing behind the carburator (to mounting position of the tv cable differse from your kickdown cable)
Differend front exhaust piece, it will hit the 700r4 now.
A kit to replace your ECM shiftpoints to vacuum i thought.
Shorten your driveshaft.

This is NOT an easy conversion. Sounds simple on paper. In execution however, it's much more difficult. You are going to need lots of extra stuff than just the trans. I can't tell ya about the TV setup since I'm not sure how it interfaces with the carb setup on the '81.
Yeah, checking out Bowtie Overdrive's website is a good place to start. I may have their installation guide in PDF format. OR, you may be able to download it from their site.

I don't know about having to change your exhaust manifolds. I didn't have to, but then again, I have headers, not the stock manifolds. You'll also need the shifter plate since you are going from a 3spd to a 4spd. All the extra stuff that you'll need you can get from Bowtie Overdrive.

MACHINING OF DRIVE SHAFT: $50
82 SHIFTER: $50
LABOR FROM AWESOME MECHANIC:$400

And that is what I spent on my 1978's conversion! I only lost 1 week to down-time.

Must have been a '93. A '94 would have had a 4L60E, and wouldn't have a snowball's chance without an aftermarket controller or the '94 ECM.
