If you do your homework you can buy a good used German car. Your rides are proof of this...Not sure what Spanish's bag is, but I've had as good or better service out of the used BMWs I buy as any other car.
My problem is with people who have not had the experience of owning several European cars believing, ¨If its Euro it’s better.¨ We have been living in Europe since 1984, during this time we have owned at least 4 cars or trucks at all times, most of which were European built. With the exception of my Vette and a few specialty cars, we drive new, in warranty, cars and vans.
The ¨required dealer service¨ and in warranty failures are a nightmare. Here are a few examples, all of these vehicles are/were owned either by people who are associated with of the race track or by me:
Audi A6, 25Kmiles, in warranty clutch replacement, 10 days at the dealership
Saab 93, fractured valves on 3 occasions in warranty, 3 – 6 days in the shop each time.
Renault 25, blown head gasket in warranty, in France, 5 weeks at regional service center.
C class Mercedes, BTW I love this car, $1275 for scheduled service, warranty void if service not preformed.
Porsche 996, minor rear end collision, motor fell out, shipped back to Porsche on a flatbed to be rebuilt. The Citroen that hit it drove away.
VW built Pickup, The entire drive train fell out due to a bad casting, VW refused to repair it in warranty because, ¨it was being driven on unpaved roads¨. In the sales brochure for that Pickup there are pictures of it in the middle of a field loaded with oranges. Excuse me; what do you buy a Pickup for in the first place?
BMW M3, Germany’s Falcon GT, hit head on by a Yamaha Thunder Ace, car totaled, bike rider survived with minor injuries.
BMW 850csi, I wish I could tell you just how bad this car was, but I am under a ¨gag¨order not to discuss it with anybody.(The family of another owner is suing for megabucks) For the $83000 that car cost I could have bought 2 new Vettes and had a down payment for a Miami Beach Condo leftover.
I just sold my Tahoe with 50+K. The only problem it ever had was a minor transmission failure while pulling a trailer almost a thousand pounds overloaded through the Pyrenees Mountains . GM Europe took care of the problem in 1 day, retrofitted a larger xmission cooler, and had me back on the road, no grief, no pain, just good quick service. The 93 Vette, I don’t count this as one of mine because it was bought for a girlfriend, ate its first Opti when driven down a flooded street, GM Europe replaced it in warranty in a mater of hours!!
There are good Euro Cars, mostly German, we have had our share of M5´s M6´s & Mercedes which served us well even though the routine service was expensive.
There is no speculation here, the opinions I throw out are based on experience that is documented.
