My recently acquired 00 coupe came with toyo Proxes T1-S non run flat tires on them, that the original owner put on at 37K to replace the oem goodyear runflats. the car now has 45k on it and the toyos still have a lot of tread, and still look like new,and the ride and noise level is very good.

Should i spend the money and replace these perfectly good tires with the Michelin runflats, which i will eventually get when these toyos need replacement? Or keep them on till i need new tires.

My biggest concern on non runflats is when i take the ride this August to Carlisle from CT ( about 360 miles one way) IF i did have a flat.

But I do keep a small portable air compressor, and Napa tire plug kit in the car,and I also have AAA.

Any thoughts or opinions? ;shrug Ken

I have always had run-flats, but I don't think I'd throw away a good set of non-runflats for one trip a year.

:w Ken,

Some folks won't like what I am going to say here :D and that's ok I understand ;)

I drove my 1981 Corvette from Modesto, CA to Bowling Green, KY 3 times and Once from Amarillo, Tx.. The spare tire was the original, probably worthless, but it is original :D I drove the 81 from Modesto, CA to Auburn, IN for the very first CruiseFest and, Colorado Springs CruiseFest all these trips were on a set of Non Run Flat Remington 255/60/15 and the only problem I had was at about 3:00 a.m. I had alternator problems as I exited I-80 at Evanston, WY (another story :chuckle )

Our '03 came with the Pilot Run Flats at 23,000+ miles it has made a few trips. One to the Left coast and one to Effingham CruiseFest I would have no problems putting regular tires on the 03 when it comes time for new tires..

I've driven for 45+ years and can count on one hand the number of times I used a spare tire ;) and at my age and health... it's AAA and/or flatbed to the garage and motel ;)

I am in the minority when comes to this subject and that is ok, but it is my decision for my car ;) :Steer :happyanim:

If I were 22 again and drove everywhere like I was being chase by the highway patrol and late for a date, I might reconsider my thinking on the run flats, but even the run flat that is damaged needs repaired or replaced... hell my trac phone and my AAA card are my security blanket :dance

Bud

I tend to agree with catbert, I don't think that I'd replace the tires just to put the runflats on for one trip. With your compressor and plug kit, I think you'll be OK.

Thanks all, and Bud I agree with your philosophy AAA and the flatbed if needed. I havent had a flat on any of my vehicles in years.

Catbert, I will see be parking with Remo and Guy, and Bill and Ken at Carlisle this year, hope to see you again,by IM . Ken

Back in September, my wife ran over a chunk of concrete in the road in a construction area on a turnpike here in OK. Couldn't miss it.

Anyway, it cut the sidewall of the left front tire while she was doing about 60 MPH. She of course felt the thump, heard the pop and got the tire pressure warning lights and "kept driving" as there was no where to pull off the road. Thank you Goodyear run-flats!

She was on a business trip and was supposed to provide a briefing at a conference. She made it to the conference about 15 miles farther away and had no problems. Then we called for a flat bed and had it hauled home.

There was a compressor and plug kit in the car but they would not have helped. No spare either.

Without the run-flats, she would have been stuck on the side of the road and missed her meeting. That was the first cut tire we've had in nearly 10 years but it does happen. The last time it did, we had a spare tire to put on the car. Without a spare, I'll make sure I have run-flat tires just for that one chance every 10 years.

Whether you replace your tires with run-flats or keep them, it's your call.

I took the runflats off of my '98Coupe several years ago and I make the drive from CT to Carlisle. As some of the other posts said , I carry a "flat kit" with a compressor and plugs etc. and I have never had a problem. Many times in the past we would head for Carlisle as a group and agree that one or two of us would carry the flat kit to save space. I don't know anyone that put the runflats back on! \PS. AAA is a good idea!

I never leave home without it:dance

I would keep the tires on until you needed to replace them when they wear out. I have driven to Bowling Green, Ky. three times from Az with non-runflat ties (C5 Z06 does not come with runflats) over 4200 miles round trip for each trip. Keep a tire repair kit and compressor and have towing insurance.

I always find threads on the subject of tires interesting. It seems many are not happy with run-flats because they ride hard and are more noisy and thus replace them with conventional tires for a more comfortable ride. Sometimes, I think, the problem is not with the tires but, more with the choice of vehicle. Maybe a four door sedan would solve the problem:L.

Just had to add my 2 cents. I run runflats, always intend to. I would rather have the option of driving or flat bed. However, I would not change out a set of good tires for the runflats, I would replace them with runflats when the time is right.

Good advice. Thanks, Ken
