I apologize in advance for another tire question-

This car is primarily a touring car with some "spirited" weekend driving.
06 vert, 26k on original GY run flats, time for tires. All have decent tread left but all 4 are severely "scalloped/cupped" inside and outside edges. The car sounds like a monster truck with 60" mud tires. I have it narrowed down to 2 choices.

Michelin PS2 ZP
Michelin A/S ZP

Anyone have Michelin A/S ZP on their car and love them?

The tire rack shows them as having the same speed rating/service description. (also substantially cheaper) ???

Know that 1) Tire ratings--AAA, and etc--are only valid when comparing a single manufacturer's tires. They are not for comparing one band to another. 2) you get what you pay for with aftermarket run flats, ie: none of them--Michelin, Firestone, Yokohama or Kumho meet GM's ultimate run flat distance specification which is 100-mi for C6. Also, most of them are not repairable as is the Goodyear. I believe the Michelin is the only one that is but you ought to check with a Michelin dealer on that. Firestone's RFT, for instance is not repairable, thus if there is any low/no pressure incident, the tire must be scrapped.

Also, tires which are cupped are usually a sign of suspension problems, such as worn shocks or worn parts.

This is not to say that aftermarket run flat tires and not useful, it's just to caution you that switching brands may leave you with some compromises that might not be welcome if they manifest themselves unexpectedly.

Depending on how spirited your weekend spirited driving is.I had my alignment changed soon after I bought my 08.At 13,000 miles absolutely no abnormal tire wear.I estimate I'll get 30 plus thousand miles easy .I'll probably stick with GY when I do my tire change.I doubt at 26,000 miles that you've got suspension wear.

I have not used the Michelin tires on my C6s yet but I did have a set of Pilot Sport A/S ZP's on my C5 and was very happy with them. Then again, these Michelins replaced the C5 GY F1 GS that I was not as happy with.

The new GY F1 GS2 on the C6 is a very good tire - much better than teh GS1 used on the C5. Given the price difference between the PS A/S ZP and the GY F1 GS2, I'd be hard pressed not to buy the Michelin also. I just do not need tires right now.

.
Exactly what I did and I totally agree with you .The only thing on the Pilots was the outer tire bead projected past the tire rim.It was impossible to get the alignment machine to work without scratching the wheels. The new Michelin's maybe different.

I thought that was the reason for the tire ratings system is that it applies to all (IE: Uniform Tire Quality Grading-UTQG). Am I misunderstanding you ? Also being michelins come standard now would it not be safe to assume that they also meet GM's ultimate runflat spec ?

The explanation is long and involved. I'd keyword search UTOG along with searching some tire industry and government sites for the answer.

The Michelins used on the 09-10 ZR-1s meets some GM spec, but I'm not sure if it's the same as the specification for base cars and Z06es. OE ZR-1 Michelins and aftermarket replacement Michelins may not be made the same way.

The aftermarket Michelins sold for C5 and C6 replacement do not meet the spec. They meet a lesser industry-trade-organization spec. of 50 miles.

Find an alignment shop with a tool called "Tru-Align". It solves that problem.

I have the A/S ZP's on my C5 and would rate them as an excellent tire, after putting over 10k miles on them. With a tread wear rating of 400, excellent ride quality, virtually no tire noise, and are safe to use at freezing temps, they are hard to beat for a runflat tire.

I too had them on my C5, and they were a pretty nice tire...big improvement over OEM. I got Bridgestones for the C6, but I'm sure the A/S ZPs for the C6 are as good as they were for the C5.

I see you're in "PA." I would choose the all season tires for this reason alone.
You won't be able to "utilize" the PS2's to their design potential in the cold anyway. (Nor should you want to!):ohnoes

Now, if you drove year 'round and had 2 sets of tires...:D

In 2005, I put Michelin A/S ZP on my C5. The improvements included decreased noise, that hit-a-wall feel and thud when rolling across road seams was gone, and wet traction was improved over the GY OEM.

For me the run-flat is a major improvement that is worth some extra noise over a tire that I must stop for when flat, change, get repaired on or off the rim, and so on.

This work especially well for me, since I drive my C6 all year round -- because life is too short to have a day without playing with my C6.

I will put Michelin ZP on C6.

Firestone Firehawks as a substitute for GY EMT's

I installed a set of new Firestone Firehawk EMT's 500 or so miles ago after getting a little over 24k on the original set of GY EMT's. The ride and handling and reduced tire noise at freeway speeds since installing the Firestone's has greatly improved over the OEM tires.
