When I bought my '98 last summer I was told it had titanium exhaust on it. I take it this is an aftermarket item.

Can someone please educate me on the finer points of TE? And please keep in mind you are definitely talking to a novice! Also... how do I determine what it is - such as Borla, Corsa, Whoziwhatsis, etc? All I know is it sounds great! Powerful rumble when I hit the XLR8R :D hard, but no or low resonance when cruising.

Thanks in advance.

If the exhaust is in fact Ti, it must be the Z06 factory cat-back since no one else makes Ti exhaust systems yet. It is significantly lighter than the regular Corvette cat-back and flows air better as well.

Crawl underneath the rear of the car and tap the pipes or muffler on the cat-back with a small wrench or hammer, it should have an odd bell like sound, different from tapping on the steel h-pipe it bolts up too.

If it is Ti it will have a bronze-reddish purple color to the metal, different from the h-pipe or the chrome tips... A magnet will not stick to it as well.

Thanks Robert

I appreciate you taking the time to give me a TE lesson. I will check it out as you advised and I'm going to email the folks (dealership) I purchased it from and see if they can remember any details.

If it's the Z06 exhaust, that's a good thing performance-wise, isn't it? Would this make for an increase in HP? And the lighter weight would be good also, correct? As I said, I'm a novice... just trying to learn more about my car.

Thanks again.

Another thing to look at which makes it obvious is the tips. If you have black oval tips, you have a stock exhaust. Also, the stock mufflers on the later C5s (I'm not sure about earlier ones) are painted black as well. The Z06 Ti exhaust has 4 LARGE polished/chrome tips and the mufflers are not painted, they are bare.

When I bought my '04, the dealer's aftermarket sales rep and I were talking exhausts and I mentioned to him I wanted a Ti Z06 exhaust and he said that Corsa has a Ti system as well.

Here is the Z06 exhaust:
http://corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/z06/z06exhaust.html

On a side note, I just installed a Z06 catback system on my coupe. There is a noticable difference between stock and the Ti system in sound under full throttle. A deeper rumble but still civil at cruise and on the highway, not even noticable. If you have an aftermarket system, it is probably pretty loud as most aftermarket systems are.

The Ti cat-back has 30% better gas flow than the stock C5 cat-back and yes the lighter weight is a good thing as well. Performance will be somewhat better, but the sound is the main reason to do it...

The Corsa Ti is $1990 and they claim it is 10.7#'s lighter than the Z06, but I suspect the pipe walls are thinner and they use an awful lot of tubing clamps to hold the whole lashup together, unlike the Ti Z06 cat-backs which are welded into one unit making it less likely to come apart. They claim 74% better flow over the Z06 units as well, but 2,000 smackers for mufflers is a lot!

Keep it coming!

Thanks a million guys! :upthumbs This is all good information and I really appreciate it. I'm going to take a look at my exhaust and see if I can spot any of the indicators y'all have mentioned.

I do know that I have 4 oval shaped chrome tips. I went to the Corsa website and listened to the soundbytes there and it seems to be louder than my car.

Anyway - I'll check it out. If I can borrow a digital camera I'll post some pics of the system soon.

Thanks again. Please post any other thoughts on the subject.

If you have 4 oval tips, it sounds like you have a 2001 or later stock Corvette exhaust. Maybe the sales person was trying too hard to make a sale? Oh yeah, the abbreviation for the titanium is Ti.
If you're getting a nice rumble on hard acceleration, it's probably not a Z06 catback, they BARK under heavy accleration.:w

I received an email from the dealership where I purchased my car. I made a mistake :duh - The listing quoted my car as having Stainless Steel exhaust, not Titanium. :o Specifically B&B triflow according to the salesman. My bad...

I appreciate the responses to my questions, and anything further you guys can add of a descriptive nature in light of this new info would be appreciated. I'm trying to learn a little more about my car...

Vettepilot, thanks for trying to steer me in the right direction but actually I used TE to indicate Titanium Exhaust, not Ti. Actually I know quite a bit about Titanium ore and the processing of it. I am employed by a chemical company at a plant that uses T.O. to produce titanium dioxide pigment (TiO2). In my 20 years there I have been involved in every stage of the process from ore unloading to packaging, quality control and waste management.

Thanks again for the information and education guys. Now, what can you tell me about the B&B triflow?

BTW - from your avatars you guys own some beautiful Corvettes!

You worked for 20 years with Titianium and you ask US how to tell if your exhaust is Ti or not???

Now you start with the B&B triflow questions, why not go to their site and stop wasting other peoples time?

I said I worked with Titanium ore and pigment. Not Titanium exhaust systems.

And if you feel my questions are a waste of your time, don't respond to my post.

I asked questions because I don't know the answers. That's the way we learn. I thought folks on this website liked to talk about things they know and want to share. If you're wasting your time here, that would seem to be your problem - not mine.

Go ahead and ask whatever you want. If poeple here think its a waste of their time they won't and shouldn't answer.

B&B systems are made by Billy Boat (and company), an Indy Racing League driver (I don't know if he is currently competing). Don't know anything about this exhaust system except comparible to (I'm ducking here) other aftermarket systems like Corsa, Borla, GHL. Does not have quite the same following as the bigger makers.

Welcome to CAC and save the wave.

Thanks

Thanks napacruzerC5!

I went to the B&B website after receiving the email from my dealer... looked around and checked it out.

I've also looked at several other threads on exhaust systems and I'm learning. Problem is I have no background in auto mechanics and I'll have to play catch-up. That's ok because there are lots of good folks here to learn from! Like you!:D

There is no need for rudeness here. The CAC is a place to ask and answer questions. It is a place for sharing knowledge and getting help from other members.

Hey - like I said, I'm here to learn. Maybe I can improve bartending skills as well as increase Corvette knowledge ;)

Tammy and I consider the ability to multi-task important to being forum moderators: help new members, find stuff in the CAC's knowledge basis, and discorvering the answer to the all important question "shaken or stirred?" :D
