I am installing a new 290HP crate motor in my 81 and would also like to replace the lock up converter with a new one. I have found 2 possibilities at Monster Transmission. 1-B16-CEE 1600 satll for $175.00, 2-B16 CBD 1800 satll for $185.00.
My problem is that I do not know anything about transmissions or torque converters. Can some one suggest one of these, someone from another forum has suggested the 1800 stall converter, but I want to make sure before I order it. Thank you very much. Plus, has anyone ever heard of Monster Transmission?;help

I think monster transmissions is a cheap ebay outfit. Why are you replacing the original converter, is there something wrong with it? You need a lock-up converter with your tranny. I believe the stock one is 2400 stall, so with a 1600 or 1800 stall, you'll loose some performance. If yours is defective, you should look at a stock replacement. You can get one for under $150 at any auto parts store.

God bless, Sensei

Sensei,
I want to replace mine because it has been out of the car for a little over 2 years now and had gotten some junk in it from sitting around. I know I need a lock up converter, but I did not know I could get it from a local Auto Zone, Advance or NAPA store. Thank you very much that is great news. I'm off to NAPA.

Actually if all your concerned about is dirt and junk getting in it, I believe you can have your torque converter flushed at a local trans shop. If that's the case, might save you a few bucks. Just make sure you fill any new or newly flushed torque converter with trans fluid before you install it. Ask who ever flushes it how much they recomend, it's been a long time since I've done it, but a quart comes to mind....

Yeah..I agree. Take the converter to a trans shop and have them flush it, then reinstall it.

Guys,
Thank you very much for the replys. Can a transmission shop tell if the converter is good or not? I have a good transmission shop near my house.:thumb

I think that they should be able to ......
