Hi, Afta getting 3.54 gears installed i 've noticed when i leave the shifter in drive and step on it seems as its taking off in second gear as the bogs down and then pics up. Now if manual shift down to first and put my foot into it my vette takes of sideways :). Is this something to do with the kickdown cable to adjust shift points, or does it need a shift kit to allow first gear to hold out longer?

thanks
Phil

Phil,

I recomend that you make sure the detent cable is set correctly first, before messing with the shift points. Now, if in normal driving the switching between gears seem "almost manual clutch-like", then your most likely problem is the lock-up converter solenoid.

The shift-points should not be affected by the gear-drive change. If anything, the switch between 1st and 2nd should come quicker (since in effect the gear change is making tha car reach that rpm point set at the factory quicker). But it should not be so quick that 1st gear would be skipped (or ommitted).

With the engine OFF, push the metal tab on the detent cable with a screw driver, then move the slider fitting away from carb until it stops with the fitting, then release metal lock tab, then assuming that your detent cable is connected to the throttle lever, rotate by hand the throttle to the wide open position, (NOTE: WHILE MOVING THE THROTTLE LEVER, THE METAL TAB SHOULD NOT BE DEPRESSED :nono ), and then release the throttle lever.

I can tell you from experience that if the rotating of throttle lever is not done smoothly (in one motion), then the lock will set the slider in the wrong spot, and you'll have to start over.
