U-joints

Got a probleme..
Im about to replace my u-joint on the driveshaft on the dana44 side.

When I get the u-joint installed I got stiffness in the joint. There is stiff/binding movement in the u-joint.
Do you got anny procedure for seating the Joint in the caps, got the joints to move freely?
Or mayby I got wrong u.joints?

What is the partnumber for the drive shaft u-joint? THanks

I assume you are talking about the ujoint you nstalled in the driveshaft already, and it is binding somewhat...correct???

If so, it may simply be that you puched in the cap(s) a little too tightly. If you used a bench vice, this can easily happen. It should work itself out, but if not, you may have to remove/reinstall the joint.

The caps should be installed on the joint just enough for the clips to be installed, otherwise, the caps are pressed in too far

I second Zog. It's pretty much idiot-proof, the caps will only go in so far to accommodate the clips, making it tight from one side to the other. Did the caps come off prior to installation? That happened to me once and the bearings fell out, grease and all. I have a hunch your problem lies elsewhere.

I can get the clip on one side in place. But when i then try to insert the second clip I have to push in the cap so much the joint starts to bind..

Remove the ujoint caps, it sounds like you may have dropped a needle bearing in the bottom of the cap not allowing it to seat all the way. if so, drop some grease into the cap to hold the needle bearings in place while you assemble them...

double checkt that, no needle bearing there.... Strange...

If there are NO needle bearings in the cap and it won't go on all the way, it almost has to be the wrong Ujoint...compare it to the original one, and I bet you will see that the new one is longer....either that or your drive shaft shrunk (ha)...good luck

Did you press out the old caps? And did you support the yoke while pressing? If not then you might have deformed the yoke. Check to see if the two yoke cap ends are parallel to each other ( not bent in). If you used a hammer to take them apart this might have deformed the yoke and thus you will have trouble getting the clips on as now the dimensions are not correct on the yoke. Just a thought.

i think it will take alot of force to bend a yoke?

Well I solved it.

When you press the caps in the bearings all get loaded up against one end causing extra friction. Knocking it back a tiny amount frees them up. And that solved it!
