Besides the top area on the manifold (driver's side to the front), where else can I put a water temperature sending unit?

I'm toying with the idea of moving my sending unit somewhere where I don't see it. Also, I'm thinking of adding a mechanical gauge to the passenger side somewhere.

I've seen a pic of someone that added mechanical gauges in the engine compartment. I liked that idea!

Hey Vic
From memory, mines on the drivers side head at the front. :confused

Have seen them mounted into the bottom tank of the radiator to keep em low and out of sight, mainly on show cars, if this is any help.

Question: How do you read the guages in the engine bay while driving, or is there some trick mirror thing youve got planned? ;LOL

No, I know!!!!, a perspex bonnet, now thats a trick! ;LOL

Mine is in the stock location, but I just have this little wire running over my valve cover to the harness. I suppose I can lengthen the wire and route it another way.

The remote gauges in the engine compartment would be mechanical gauges. I sometimes wonder when I look at my dashboard gauges how accurate they really are. A second set of mechanical gauges would give me a little faith in my mechanical gauges. In fact, a tiny temperature gauge would probably be enough already.

My 75 350 block in my Camaro has a location between 1 and 3 cylinders on the heads. The wire going to the temp gauge has been routed up from the bottom across the front a-arms and you can;t even see it...on my 76 Vette it is in the location you talk about and it looks horrible...but then again, there are so many other wires because of all the emissions crap on it..the whole engine bay looks horrible....

I did some research and found another place. it is between the #7 and #8 cylinders. (right above the starter) I will route the wire along with my starter wiring, then it will go straight up about 6 inches to the new location.

I would like to install a mechanical temperature gauge in the place you talked about. (between #1 and #2 cylinders on the head) Not a remote gauge, but a little gauge right there.

If I have time this weekend, I wanna flush out my cooling system, then relocate the temperature sending unit. Should be easy.

Steelblue75,

the locations are on the head.

...as far as that little gauge, I wanna have something that is nothing more than a little gauge face, right there on the head. I don't want to ever second guess my water temperature. Right now, I spend as much time under the hood as I do driving, so this would help me out. Especially, since I am now having a cooling problem. Most likely t is from my new fan.

When is your cooolant problem. City driving or highway? If its highway....do you have the spoiler under the front? Its meant to direct the air up to the rad.

Remember, SBC heads are swappable left to right, so the threaded spot between #1 and #3 cylinders would ALSO be the same on between #6 and #8. I've also seen them in the intake manifold water jacket, and I've seen bosses for them in the filler neck too.

this might be a gross oversiplification, but if it is the wiring that is bothering you, on my 78 the exhaust manifold hides a lot of the sending unit and i have the wire running to the loom on the driver's side fender and back to the dash through that harness (if i remember correctly, it is the same loom and harness that the alternator wire is run through).

If I put it on the driver's side, where would the wire route? I would have to route it to the fender area of the vehicle. (That's where it originates from anyway.) I may be too picky, but It seems a little noticable for me. On the other side, the wiring will drop straight down. It will not be seen.

As far as the cooling problem goes...I just noticed it during my last road trip. Granted, it was very hot outside. I haven't experimented to see if it happens during traffic or highway driving. I do have a front spoiler, but it doesn't seem to appear to have any way to deflect the air upwards. Weather permitting, I'll drive it around this weekend and get it hot, then let it sit in the driveway and run a bit, and see if it gets hotter or cooler.
