Got the valve cover off and plugs #1 & #5. All I had time for tonight. Cranked her over after disconnecting the fuel line and coil. Nothing came out of the plug holes. Didn't take a shot of the plugs but #1 was black and #3 a tan color. #1 was not fouled. The was no miss during idle the last I had her running.

I'm waiting for delivery of a leak down tester and will try to do a compression check tomorrow.

No sign of coolant in there.

Wonder what that red thing is in the upper left corner in this picture?

The engine is a newly rebuilt 454 with aluminum heads, LS-7 head gasket.

I can't see the intake gasket, did you just use perma-gasket? Might be the problem right there.Nice bug thou

Here' the intake gasket I used, Victor Reinz 95007SG. You can only see the gasket in the center of the manifold.

I think a picture of the intake manifold below the carburator would bve appropriate to see if there is any oil laying on the bottom. I would suggest you pull the carb and look.

Could it (intake gasket) be sucking oil from the valley?

Can't help but I have the same problem with my small block. I'll be interested to see your diagnosis. What did make a difference for me was replacing the factory intake with an edelbrock manifold. I have DART Iron Eagle heads. When I swapped the manifolds, I saw nothing that would suggest that I was pulling in oil from the lifter valley. It APPEARED that I was pulling oil in from the PCV valve but that's not the case.

Rocker Bolts

Take a small mirror and look at the rocker bolts in the bottom side of the head. I said in the other thread it was my head bolts but later corrected it as it was not but the rocker bolts that weren't sealed. Pulled them out one at a time sealed and replaced them, no more leak or smoke and I had a lot of both prior to finding the problem which drove me crazy for a week. Keep us posted as to what you find.

Rocker bolts? Can you Explain? How do I use a mirror to see them?

On My heads.............

The rocker bolt threads are drilled all the way through to the inside of the head. With the intake off using a small mirror, like the one on a rod that swivels, get it as close to the intake and exhaust ports from the top with a light and look for oil where the threads are.
