I bought a real nice set of '63 hubcaps because the ones that came with the car had been beat with a rubber mallet getting them on the wheels and putting small dents in the perimeter of the cap.

So what do most people do to get the hubcap on without putting dents on its outer edges?

On my 63 SWC in the 1960s, I used the heel of my hand to exert force. Also used a knee to hold it in place as I hit it with my hand. Didn't dent the hub caps, but my hand was very sore. Fortunately I did not have to do this often.

I'm a heel of my hand AND a rubber mallet guy. :D

I push/hit them on with the heel of my hand, then use 3-4 plies of towels over the hubcap before bopping them with the rubber mallet for the final "set".

thanks Chuck, that is exactly what I did.....:thumb

I used a Dremel grinding tool to remove a couple of thousandths from the "biting" edges. Now I can push them on - if I push really hard.
I ended up using my fist and then towels and a rubber hammer on the edges only gently....worked out great, no new dents.....
