What kinda mileage do C5s get?

I have 38,000 mile on my car. I get about 20-22 MPH overall if I keep my foot off the floor. On the highway I get 29. The key to good mileage is not using all the horsepower everytime you pull out.

The DIC is pretty close on my 99, I'v checked with milage and fuel slips several times and it is always withing a mile or less per gallon. 27-29 combined around town(some highway) all highway 31-34 mpg.

My 97 6-speed will average around 31 mpg on the Interstate at 78 mph (cruise control can be fun!) and around 20 mpg in town. Astounding, since at the touch of my right foot it'll blow my 57 away/.

Bill, when you say "2 Vettes - 11 speeds", how is that? The '97 is a 6-speed, so that must mean your '57 is a 5-speed??? :confused

Thank you for your astute mathematican skills!:beer (You're the first to notice (or at least ask...)

I installed a Richmond street 5-speed in May of 2002, then drove all night the next night to the NCM from FL. In August I took a 7000+ mile jaunt from FL to CA and back. Now 15000+ miles on the trans and no problems!

Hey Stallion, I don't normally keep track of the gas mileage. Doubt many of the C5 owners do.

However, I've been to Carlisle twice now. I kept track of my mileage both times. My average per the DIC (dash computer) was 28.9 and 29.2 mpg. This was my total all around trip. Both highway cruising averaging 80-85 mph and the countryside runs to and from the fairgrounds and hotel.

It's not so much that you save a few dollars at the gas station, but rather you can go long distances between fill-ups :)

I just finished a 4300 mile 10 day road trip in my 2000 6-speed convertible (from San Antonio to LA to NAPA and back thru the Grand Canyon) and averaged 30.7 mpg, with the cruise set for 85 most of the time. I also have a 35 mile (1-way) drive to work and typically get 26-27 mpg.
I love seeing peoples faces (particularly the PC-types with their imports) when they find out that I get better mileage then they do and I get to have a h.ll of a lot more fun doing it.

My DIC indicated 35 mpg the last time I checked it. I was doing between 60-70 highway in 6th gear consistantly. Combined mileage indicates 23 mpg.
When I saw this post (35 mpg), my immediate reaction was: "...in your dreams...."

Later in the day I was driving my coupe, and low and behold at normal operating temp on the freeway, I was getting 34-35 instantaneous on the DIC at 2,500 rpm with the converter locked. I tried it going both directions (in case there was a tail wind in one direction) - it was 34 in one direction and 35 in the other.... I was still doubtful and tried the test again yesterday, with the same results. Given the enhancements to my drivetrain, I am amazed at the mileage readings. I have found that the DIC is pretty accurate in regard to miles to empty, so I think that the instantaneous result is probably on point. Now, I don't expect that kind of mileage while driving hard, but what I can get when I am not pushing it - wow!

30.1 on my most recent highway trip from Atl to FL. 6 speed and it's still new to me so I was in it a little at times.

No question the gas mileage numbers on C5's are terrific! Here's a fun thing to try: set your cruise at different mph and watch the instant mileage figures.. Of course you have to consider up and down grade conditions, but I have found with my 99 vert that best instant mileage is around 75 mph. As someone already mentioned in this thread, my instant mpg in cruise at around 75 mph is about 35 mpg on level ground.

Hi STALLION -

I have averaged 19 mpg over 30k miles on my 02 Z06 - that is including several road trips, and trips to the drags etc.

I do not drive for mileage, and I run fast on the highway. I keep a log every time I put gas in it (I do this to see if problems crop up - mileage is the first thing to go normally) - I recently input it all into a spreadsheet.

The very best I have done is 26 mpg on the highway on one trip for one tank of gas.

I drive 75 or 80 on the road.

best regards -

My aorund town average is 23mpg. This is a blend of highway and surface streets and 1/4 mile drags every other week. On a highway trip to Tenn. last year the DIC said I was averaging 32.8. This was at 80mph with the A/C on. Don't you just love thes3 cars...

If anyone is interested. I changed the gear ratio on my 6 speed from 3.42 to 4.10's. Lost an average of 4 miles per gallon just about everywhere. Made a heck of a difference with the car and wouldn't go back. It's enough of a difference for me to wait until 4.10's are available for the C6 before even considering the trade.

I was getting an average of 27 to 31 before, now 23 to 27 mpg with my old way of driving. ALTHOUGH I've been having so much fun with it, the mileage has gone to crap down to about 22 average highway mileage. I know it's me but I don't care.

Also noticed oil consumption is up too because of the higher engine rpm's. I'm also going to change the oil more often.

The first tank at Carlisle we averaged 20.something. Considering that we sat in traffic for probably 2+ hours on that tank that is awsome IMO.

After listening to C4C5's(Paul's) C5 tech seminar he insisted that the best way to change the oil according to the oil life monitor.(OLM) He went into a big explaination, which makes complete sense. I might suggest that instead of changing it at regular intervals that you change the oil when the oil life monitor is under 10%. Paul tells his customers that when the OLM gets to 10% call and make an appointment. By the time you get there it will be down between 3&5 percent. Personally I would trust him on this topic, and only change your oil via the OLM. But its your 'vette, so do as you wish. I can go into more detail if that is what it takes to convince you.

It couldn't possibly be bad for the engine to change oil at regular intervals could it? My guess is that Paul stated something about improved oil detergents and environmental impact influencing his decision.

Can you go into some small detail on the matter?

No problem. Now all this info is from him, if I left out a detail or misstated something someone who also heard it please chime in.

You oil life monitor (OLM, so I dont have to type it out all the time) monitors EVERYTHING. If the engine was started hot or cold, what gear you are in, RPMs, how you are driving it, speed, temps, run time, basicly EVERYTHING to do with the engine and how it is operating. The OLM then puts all this info through a complicated calculation and comes up with the % oil life remaining. According to Paul, even if the OLM shows 0% you still have a miles(I think he said somewhere around 15-20) of safe driving with that oil. He made the point that if you change it sooner you are just spending money that you don't need to.

Is changing it sooner bad, NO, but un necessary.

IMO if I had a vette and were ready to put it away and had more than 1000 miles or so on the oil I would consider changing it just so the motor would sit with fresh oil. IDK if that is the correct thing to do but that is what I would do, personally.

How many miles per gallon do you guys get?
Hey Stallion,

When I got my C5 two weeks ago, the DIC said 19.1 MPG.
Since I have been driving it, it says 24.2 MPG average around town. Although I have stomped on it a few times,
I must have a smaller right foot (8-1/2)than the previous owner.:L

Pete, how's the new '98? It looks great. After all, silver is the best color. ;)
