Wheel weights

Because I have the mag wheel option, and given that most shops do not have stick on wheel weights; am I asking for trouble to request that new tires be balanced by only placing the balancing weights on the inside of the wheel only?

Mine has magnesium wheels too. I didn't realize there that wheel weights would be problematic. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say about this.

If you don't get enough feedback, you might try a post in the Z06 section, since those have the mag wheels too.

It shouldn't be too much trouble as any sports car or performance cars need to be balanced this way. That being said, taking it to joe's down the street may be asking for trouble, but I would imagine the car alone would dicate more discretion then that. Vette dealers and bigger chain tire places should be able to give you the high speed balancing, to include the inside weights rather then the bubble balancing which is inadequate for the vettes.

My chrome Y2K wheels are balanced with stickon weights on the inside and it has not caused any problem!

best bet is to go some where that has the right stuff. even if balanced on the back side you need to use the stick on weights. (to get the balance right at 150)

I could be wrong but I don't think that the Z06 has the Magnesium wheel option. I have never seen Mag wheels in the Z06 sizes. Anyone know for sure? That said wheel weights on the inside should pose no problem at all. I always have my wheels balanced this way. Curious as to why you thought there might be a problem?

You're right. I looked it up on the tech center and they're spun aluminum. I have no idea where I got the magnesium idea from. Must have been smokin' crack :L (JUST a figure of speech!!)

First thing i did after buying my Zzz was take it in and have the wheels/tires high-speed balanced. I had them us the stick-on wheel weights. The Bozos who did it before I bought the car put the weights on the out sidead . This tends to chip the clear coat which in time will cause the clear coat to start coming off. Plus, when they bang on the weights on any part of an alum wheel it pits and dings the soft metal. Thus a banged up rim. If you have chrome wheels it will do the samething. Just might take longer.

MAKE SURE and ask before you let them touch your car. I had to call several places before I found the tire dealership willing to do the work. It cost me about $20.00 bucks more but the job was done right and to my satisfaction. The others couldn't/wouldn't touch the car and one place they just didn't want to screw with the car.

On my '04 Zo6/Z16, the tires have been balanced with weights on the outside of the rim.:eyerole It came that way from the dealer new. Is this normal? I havn't looked yet to see if there is any weights on the backside, but on the inside there no stick on's.

I have an '04 CE Conv with the polished alumn wheels that is not quite one month old. It has the weights on the outside of the rim. So assume that this is the factory procedure. (Don't know if there are weights on the backside or not). My plan is to take it down to a GOOD shop to get it rebalanced on a good spin balancer with stick on weights. But think I will wait until I have 5-10K miles first so that everything is seated in before the rebalance.

Regular old discount tire (Encinitas CA) has stick on's & did a perfect job on my race rims/tires. The stick on's go inside split between the inner & outer parts of the inside rim as needed.


I taped over them with that metal "muffler mender" tape to insure against loosing a weight.

Find a tire place with a Hunter "load force" 9700 (or some such number I forget) balancer. They apply force to the tire as it spins & pinpoint where the weights go.

Tire Rack here in my town did a great job on my Trans Am... I have Polished Alum Torque Thrusts and they used the tape ons. When I went back to rebalance, they pulled off the old tape, goo gone'ed the spots clean, then balanced! All for the standard cost of a balance! Cheers to them!

Yes, sadly GM hammers weights on the outside of wheels @ the factory. In ideal world this does provide for the best possible dynamic balance (read, no vibration) however given the design and offset of factory vette wheels there is no reason that stick on weights can't be used. Just be sure to specify a DYNAMIC balance. Weights should be placed as close as possible to the outer edge of wheel and also placed on inner edge of wheel.
