Where can I buy a PROM ?

Was wondering if computer PROMS are available fot the 81? Have seen the Hypertech ones but never the stock ones. Anyone know if they are available?

I have not seen the stock one. But the best deal I've seen on the Hypertech is at Autozone, for about $120, why not get one. I don't think the chip is anything the NCRS guys would grade the car on.

Aftermarket is all I could ever find. HyperTech makes two different ones for our cars, street and strip. I have the steet version and wonder if this is one of my problems with it running rich. But at least I have a varying dwell now.

Changing the PROM is a bit of a pain as the battery has to come out and then getting the four bolts that hold the ECM in requires working on your head. You may just want to pull the driver's seat out.

Thanks. I removed the ECM to replace it and it was a pain the way it is in there. Which way does the notch on the prom point? Towards the front (the connection side) or the rear? Glad you got your dwell to vary. Cant seem to get mine to do it.

From the 81 maual, the picture shows the PROM notch towards the opposite end of the ECM. There should be a notch in the PROM socket at this same end, to match-up with the PROM itself.

The instructions from Hypertech should also show a diagram of all of this. Did you get the new PROM yet?

No not yet. After spending a few bucks on a ECM, oxygen sensor, coolant sensor and tps I have to save up a bit!!

I have the motor out of my 81 and when I replace the motor I am NOT going to put the computer back in, I HATE computers.
