where is the VIN number on a 1978?

On your chassis it could be on the top of your chassis (left side rear) from the place where the trailingarm goes in till the end of the upper chassispart. But you have to lift the body to see it Easier way is indeed the A pillar.

decided not to lift the body....but did find it on the A-pillar...thanks everyone!

You'll also find it stamped on the top horizontal surface of the driver's side frame rail, centered on the front edge of the #4 body mount bracket; can be seen with the body on, using a small mirror from the outside.
