I going to buy one of the 250hp GM universal motors and was wondering what the best cam would be to add some hp to it. I see that Salle Chevrolet adds a cam with a duration of 204 in,214 exh and a lift of .420 in,442 exh and gets 285 hp out of this engine. This is the same specs as the Summit cam #SUM-K1102. If I went with the next cam up #SUM-K1103 214 in,224 exh and a lift of 442 in, 465 exh would this increase the hp anymore? This is my first vette restoration and I was trying to do it on a buget. I also am installing 3.55 gears to help out the 0 to 60 time. It is also a 4spd.

Steve,
for budget and performance, look at GM 12486041. it is a new Vortec 350 offered in two stages of assembly. basic is long block minus intake, distributor, flywheel and balancer. it runs $2400. complete is everything you need minus carb for $3000. the motor makes 330hp and 380tq with streetable 5500 rpm limit. I realy like that motor too but it would be $1,000 more plus I couldn't use my intake or flywheel. The money I would save will help with the gear change and the trans rebuild. Seeing this is the first time I have tried anything like this and I still have a ton of work to do on the body I didn't want to spend all my money on the engine. Thanks for the reply.

Check out Comp Cams XE262

Check out the following article - I think they used an XE268,
BUT (again not sure if it's this article, I think it might be) they state
toward the end that the 262 idles smoother and has better low rpm
throttle response but gives the same torque and power as the 268
(on this basic type of engine). Also look at the dyno tests on the
Comp Cams website - they show the same thing. And I've read other
articles on the same type of basic engine only using the expensive
hydr rollers that didn't do much if any better.

Be sure to read all "stages" of the article

Thanks texancanuc for the link . That sounds like a great deal. Looks like it might be the motor I was looking for. How does it sound and how does it perform?

the sound depends on your exhaust but i had open pipes for a bit and it was scary...
the performace is great i just need new gears i have the factory 2:73 need 3:50's or something like that
