Why are my brakes squeaking?

I noticed on the drive home last night that my brakes are squeaking. . . only after I've driven for a short distance. I've got 6100 miles (really easy miles with the exception of a couple of hard runs to the North GA Mtns.) and she's my daily driver. I don't think it's cause for alarm, but it bugs me. . .Sweet ride, squeaky brakes. Time to take her in for service? I want to keep her out of the service bays as much as possible. Any advice is welcome!

Thanks,
Susan

Same problem with mine. It's in the dealership as we speak should picke it up today. I'll let you know what they say after I find out.

Is yours your daily driver? I'm beginning to wonder if that's an issue. I bought it to drive/enjoy. . . not to sit in the garage and wait for the weekend to roll around. What's the mileage on yours? Thanks for the reply!

Yes mine is a daily driver. It's only got 9400 miles but I treat it as a car. Drive in the rain, ect. This is my fourth Vette and by far the best one yet but it's still just a car.

:w Thanks! I'm feeling better already. I REALLY appreciate you taking the time to reply. I'll wait to hear from you about yours. I'll be out of town this week-end so I'll check back Monday. BTW, Patrick said it's probably brake dust that builds up and to buy a solvent/cleaner at a auto parts store and that should take care of it. I clean mine EVERY Sunday, so I question that. I'd like to hear about yours first.

Just turned 6K miles in the first month :D mine just stopped the low speed squeak..I think all the rain driving back from Tampa following the storm cleaned them out....

Sweet ride! I just want the noise to STOP! hahaha

I just came from Tom Jumper today..got the recall taken care of .. I asked about the brake squeak and was told if it came back they would put on the ceramic pads. You may want to give them a call..
By the way I was very happy with there service. I even got to watch them do the recall repairs and I’m not an easy customer to please at least when it comes to my Vette’s..

I bought SWEET at Gwinnett Place Chev., great service dept. I call them on Monday. Thanks!

Funny this came up. My 04 has 1900 miles on it and we have the squeak, too. It seems to squeak only from a very slow speed stop like you'd do in a parking lot or something. The service deptartment said they get glazed over sometimes when new from a sudden stop. I say BS and will wait to see what some of you find out. Mine goes back to the dealer next Thursday for the recall work. They better be ready this time. The general manger says they will. I was a hot puppy when I left 2 weeks ago.

On another note, are the Borla stingers way loud inside the car? I really wish I had a little more rumble at the low rpms but I don't want to sacrifice the comfortable ride inside.

Squeaking brakes

My brakes on my '02(25,00 miles)had been squeaking primarily when I first drove the car but subsided usually within 15 minutes of driving. After approx 6 weeks of the squeaking I bought the car into the dealer last week & was told the following: There was a glaze on the rotors and the brake pads still had a 50% life on them so they said I really did not need brakes. They did tell me though, that my tires had feathering on them which indicated the car needed an alignment. I got an alignment and washed the car(I do wash it once every week)I am not sure if it is a concidence, but the squeaking did stop. We shall see if the problem has subsided temporarily or if it is actually fixed!

I hope so. Good luck. It's so annoying. . .I'm going to take mine in on Friday and hear what they have to say. . .

Brake dust makes mine squeak.
I've just accepted it as my little indication that it is time to wash the wheels ;)
Wash those babies off (even just hose them off) and take it back out. See if it gets better (if only briefly).

Washing your Vette will not cure your squeaky brakes....:L ...you need to have the glaze on the rotors and pads sanded or have the rotors turned and put new pads on.....Then you need to go through the procedure of "bedding" the brakes...this will keep the rotors from warping and squeaking....I could not ever live with the squeaking/squealing...:L

Do a google search on "bedding brakes"...:upthumbs

My 00 coupe with 34k on it had the same squeal and they took my pads off and they were gazed over. Put a set of new pads on and that fixed the problem and its not my daily driver and when it does get driven its babied

Thanks for all the input and advice. . .man I love this place!

Hiya, Tammy!

take it to the dealer...while you can still bother them for free....:upthumbs
