Winter storage problems

I took my 89 out of storage yesterday and had some starting problems. I left the battery conected over the winter (probably shouldn't have) so I had to jump it to get it going. Once started, it idles perfect and sounded great. When I put in in gear, it would stall right when I started to move. Once stalled I would boost it again and the outcome would be the same.

I had this problem last year when out of storage so I bought a new battery. Could the battery just need a charge, or is it shot again, or am I dealing with a whole different problem?

In the end I got fed up and had the car towed back to my house where I have a charger on it now to see if that helps.

I would recommend that you remove the batter and give it a full day / night of trickle charge. Measure the voltage and It should be 13.5vdc or so. It could be that when you put the car in gear, the draw on the alternator is too much and the car stalls out.

I also leave my battery connected during storage. This year, I bought a Battery Tender and it keeps the battery fully charged at all times. This type of charger "floats". It will charge ony when needed.

Good Luck,
Dino

After you charge the battery drive the car for about 20 minutes.
If the battery was dead the ECM lost memory and it has to relearn. It will relearn and run fine after about 20 or 30 minutes of driving.
