Hood cable/latch is broken - Dealer is no help

I received the tool that I purchased from Eckler's and I was in in five minutes.

The broken part is a small clip that holds the cable on the latch. Now I will try to determine if the clip is part of the latch or part of the cable kit. I don't want to be charged for both.

Thanks for all of the help.
Can you elaborate a little more? I've modded a few c4s,deep into motor, paint and detail all my engine parts etc,and never once "really" looked at the cable latch. How far from the edge of the hood did you have to go over before sliding in the tool, did you have to tilt the tool forward or backward etc? I'm off to home depot to get a brass rod rite now,
Heres what happened.....89' won't start this morning, didn't hear the fuel pump, need to take a look at the fuel pump fusable link and test the relay.
Any more tips on poppin the latch would be great.

A stuck hood can be a major pain, it's happened to me. I carry one of the hood devices from MAD, and just got a permanent device from MAD that looks very useful that you mount and leave attached. Haven't installed it yet, too cold and the hood's covered in snow now.

I got one of those emergency hood latch wire kit things from MAD. I'm gonna see if I can return it. I had it on the car, it sat outside in one ran storm. And it started to rust. I went to Lowes and got the parts and made them myself for $5. The Lowes wire I got is galvanized, so it won't rust.

Do you guy's have a pic of the emergency cable? Does it hook to the latch,or the cable? I will have to make one and install it when i finally get into my hood. I made a tool, didn't work, just butchered my hood seal was all. I removed my fuel pump, put 12 volts to it,dead.. will replace pump in morning.. Still need to get the hood open though...grrr
I guess the positive thing, was at least the fuel pump decided to die when the car is parked infront of my house..lol

The device I got appears to be made from black plastic. I didn't examine it closely yet, just threw it in the back for when things warm up - or I get past all the stupid medical stuff and move back to FLA.
Was yours black? and that's what rusted?

The cable on mine is made of metal. It looks dark. The cable end that sat in the cowl is what started to rust. I'm guessing it is just raw steel. Kinda dumb to have an emergency cable made of raw steel that is exposed to the elements. Which will rust all over the place. Then when you need it, it breaks cause it rusted out. Haha.

Here is a link to Ecklers emergency hood release.
Corvette Emergency Hood Release Cable, 1984-1996
I have seen these emergency release cables on several C4s. Remember, your C4 is 14 to 26 years old. What do you think is the life span of the factory hood release cable? Joshwilson3 has the right idea. Make up your own emergency cable.

Don't get that one. That is what I got. It is a Mid America cable and will rust.

What I did on the C1 is to run a braided picture frame wire from the hood latches through the firewall and let it hang under the dash. I did it for both the left and right hood latches. If the cable does break, I have the backup.

WHAT obsessed you to resurrect this post from 2003?!?!? :W
Funny thing is some one responded to the ORIGINAL poster asking for elaboration!:boogie
