Ok, that sounded desperate. I need some guidance and some technical help. I have been trying to sell to my C5 (2001 Torch Red, auto, 40K miles) for the past few months. I want to upgrade to the C6 but my budget will only allow me to look at an 05 - 07. I am trying to get between 18,500 and 19,500 for my 01 but the problem is that I have not had any offers until recently. I came across a 2005 Daytona Sunset Orange, 32,500 miles Z51 package. The dealer is asking 29K and wants to give me 17K for mine. Is this a fair deal? If I sold mine privately I am confident that I could find another from a private seller and avoid the taxes and dealer fees (AZ does not require taxes paid on private sales). But again, the problem is that I have not had any bites on mine. I listed it on Craig's List, Auto Trader, Cars.com and still nothing. I am starting to think this is my only chance to sell my car and get the C6.

So the question is, do I be patient and wait and jump at the offer on the table and maybe try to get the dealer to give me just a little more on my trade.

As far as my technical question, assuming I do decide to buy the 05, will my rims and tires that are on my 01 fit on the C5? The 01 has upgraded rims and a bigger size (19 front and 20 in the rear). They really look great on the 01 and I might want to keep them if the dealer agrees to swap them out.

Thoughts?

Thanks so much. I am new to this forum and wanted to get advice from the experts.

Well, I'm no exprert, but I'll give this a go. I don't know much about your car so it would be difficult to appraise it. But seeing that the car is 12 (or 13 depending on how you look at it) years old, $17k isn't bad for a trade. Many 01's are selling for a lot less than that.

The question then becomes is the 05 the car you want? Does it have the options you want/require? If you had the 01 sold, would this be the car you would buy? If you answered yes to each of the previous questions, then I'd say go for it.

I think 17K is not bad for your C5.....I just don't know what the 05 C6 is worth.....trades usually work good for the dealer....and you get screwed both sides....it is a convenience to be able to do business at one store. You know what milk costs at the 7-11 Convenience store vs. say Safeway. I would keep trying to sell your car, have you listed it with all the area Corvette clubs and such. There are some Corvette pros on line at the CAC and they will be chipping in soon I'm betting.......

I'll put in my 2-cents here also.

A friend just bought a 2008 coupe, base 1LT, with 27K miles for $29K from a Cadillac dealer. He did not have a trade-in car.
That makes me think the '05 might be priced a bit high. Get them to come down.

If you can swing it, buy your "new" C6 straight up and sell the C5 later if need be.

I've seen 05's selling for low 20's so they have room to deal on this one. I've been, kind of, testing the waters myself.

Yeah but where are you finding them. Im in AZ and these cars can be driven all year round. I think the more they are in demand or can be used the higher the price.

Oh, I agree with you wholeheartedly, that's why I think that $29k is not that far out of line. Like I said in my first response, answer those questions, and see if you want to talk to them further.

I think the 05s are greatly undervalued. It was the last year for the 4 speed automatic and had the black shark fin that bothered some people. I had an 05, and it was a great car, and I didn't treat it gently. It ran consistent 12.85s in the quarter almost every Friday night. They had one problem, a crank bolt issue, but that wouldn't be an issue at this point. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up an 05.

I think your getting a great deal on the trade in price. On the other hand, not so great a deal on the purchase price. Not a terrible price on the c6, but not the greatest. I hope it's not the base model auto (with no paddle shift) That is my favorite color, though. If you feel comfortable with, that's all that matters. I've got a feeling that they already have a buyer lined up if you do the deal. See if you can squeeze them for a couple of thousand off the c6. Good luck!

I sell Corvettes and think your trade-in price for the 01 is right on. Remember everyone...it's a trade-in price, not a retail price. Big difference!

As far as the 05 goes, if that is the car you want, then just trade in the 01 and be done with it. Someone mentioned a paddle shifter for the 05. That wasn't available until 2006. I have had two 05 Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic 6-spd convertibles and have zero problems with either one. I love that color!

I don't know about Arizona, but in some states you only pay sales tax on the difference between the new car and the one you traded in, which can certainly make a difference.

Let us know how you make out.

They said it had the Z51 Package. I know how it figure out what are the features of the Z51 Package. I'm going to see if they will go down in price a little. That for the response and thanks for serving our country.

Thanks for the response. The 05 from what I was told has the Z51 Package. I just need to figure out what are the options with the Z51 package, lol. You are correct about the tax. Additionally, here in AZ we don't pay tax on private party sales which is why I wanted to sell it on my own. I was hoping to avoid the tax and the dealer fees and maybe just get a little more car for my money.

Can I ask another question? Because of your background you might know the answer....On my 01 I have 19 in the front and 20s on the rear. The rims are very expensive and the tires are still in good shape. assuming the dealer is cool with it will my rims fit on the 05. I keep hearing about the "off set Ratio" but to be honest I don't know what that means. These rim have a very lox profile. I don't know if that makes a difference.

If you have 19s and 20s, you have a plus two wheel set. As you know, stock was 17s and 18s. C5s and C6s have different offsets in the rear because of different brake assemblies. If you know know the exact specs of the wheels, you can't assume they are interchangeable. At this point it's a wild ass guess.

The easiest way to spot a Z51 is drilled rotors. For all the details on the package, see the knowledge base on this forum.

BTW...tires can be low profile, due to short sidewall height. Rims are rims, and are just differentiated by size.

Good luck with the swap. You'll love the C6.

That's a great looking car.....congrats on it.......love that color and the interior.......you are going to enjoy it a lot I'm thinking......:thumb

Love that color combo! I think you're going to like it a lot. Congrats!:w
