Thanks for the Hagerty suggestion. Slightly disappointing to see that values have been flat or even trending down slightly the last ten years. I didn't buy it as an investment but I had hoped for a little gentle appreciation.
Hi all, been away from this forum a few years, various reasons, and now I'm thinking about selling my '73. Thing is, I have no idea what to ask. Values at places like NADA Guides seem all over the map. Anyone got any favorite places they use?
Not so hard
Can't help with the thread, 'though if you search on my user name you might find something, but I have removed and rebuilt the Muncie in my '73. It was a few years ago but actually it wasn't that big of a job. The main thing to remember is that it's heavy! I found myself with about...
Well thats what I thought too but I can't see how the right angled end with the welded nut will fit if I turn the strap over. Also, the way I've installed the strap is the orientation shown in the assembly manual. I'm just saying that it doesn't seem to make much sense.
I'm replacing my tank with a kit purchased from Ecklers and I'm concerned about the way the straps fit around the tank support bracket. The photo shows what I'm dealing with.
I have 2 problems:
1. the strap seems about 1/2" too short - or do I just need to be more muscular?
And 2. it...
I've pulled my old rusted and leaking gas tank and plan on purchasing a new one - will probably go with the kit from Corvette Central - but here's my question: all the tanks I've looked at online appear to be bare metal. Was the tank ever painted? Seems like it should be to avoid corrosion but...
Just wanted to say thanks for the well-reasoned and well-explained replies. You've given me a few things to check.
I did notice some staining on the top side of the spare wheel carrier, which I'm thinking is due to gas. I've also seen what appear to be damp patches in the felt that separates...
Hello all,
I'm pretty sure I have a leaking gas tank. I say this because when it's full I get a strong smell of gas around the right rear wheel, but at half full the smell pretty much disappears, EXCEPT under sharp braking or acceleration.
So, this evening I removed the spare wheel carrier...
Replaced coil and condenser - problem solved!
I guess I should have been more scientific and just changed one thing at a time. As it is, I can't say definitively if it was the coil or the condenser that was at fault, but at least the motor's now running.
Thanks to everyone for their ideas...
Well a quick update on this: I decided to change the coil and condenser, and that did the trick. It started up first turn.
I once saw a quote from Lars G of tuning fame to the effect that "90% of carb problems are timing problems," and I think I'd have to agree. So if you get a stalling...
I haven't specifically checked the fuel pump. It was new about 1,000 miles ago. Also, when I check the fuel level in the float bowl it's always at the correct level, so I think the pump is OK.
Next suggestion please!
Yes the squirters in the carb are working.
No, I haven't moved any of the ignition wires.
I always use a gas stablilzer over the winter.
All great ideas, keep 'em coming please!
Well there are a lot of possibilities. First off though, I think old cars have more odor than do new cars, so expect some oil/gas fragrances. That said, it shouldn't be a strong smell.
I had the same with my 73. It got better after I rebuilt the Holley, and seemed pretty much cured after I...
Well I've gone from intermittent stalling so frequent stalling to not starting at all, so I need some help!
Here's what I've done/checked:
Cranked the engine while holding #1 plug lead to ground and observed a spark.
Checked the static timing as best I can with a dwell meter - seems that...
Vac leaks? Good idea - I'll take a look.
I don't think this is a fuel problem - it accelerates OK under WOT - in fact I'm leaning towards electrical. Had it running in the garage this evening - dwell is good, timing about right, 16" of Hg from the manifold, then it just stopped. Dead. No pops...
I have a suspicion that my poor running problems are due to sticking centrifugal advance weights. It's been a few years since I rebuilt the distributor, and at least two since I last removed the distributor cap, and I really can't remember what I did.
I'm thinking that a little smear of grease...
Those were my thoughts. I cleaned out the fuel bowl (Holley 4150 carb) but the problem's been getting worse. What tends to happen is that when I back off the gas the engine dies. On occasion I get a backfire thru the carb when this happens.
I'm starting to think this is a timing problem -...
