I am interested in installing a 4-speed in place of the 3-speed in my '58. What problems might there be: bell housing, clutch disc, throw-out arm/bearing, pilot bushing, driveshaft yoke, driveshaft length, transmission mount, etc?? Any help would be great!

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the Corvette Action Center. All you will need is the transmission, the shifter, the shift pattern plate and 4-speed shifter boot on the console. I'm not totally sure if the driveshaft is a different length though. I don't have any 3 speed laying around any more to compare to. I'll check another source when I get home.

A T-10 is a straight bolt-in, uses the same prop shaft and yoke. A pre-1970 Muncie will also work with a rear mount adapter plate and a new (26-spline) yoke. A post-1970 Muncie would need a new clutch disc as well.

Check your yoke - many have been replaced over the years, and some have the 3"-long passenger car yoke instead of the unique Corvette-only 4-3/4"-long yoke. The C1 Corvettes used the long yoke due to the amount of fore-aft yoke movement caused by the extreme U-joint angles, and using the short passenger car yoke can cause twisting of the output shaft splines.

Good point from John there. Lots of Passenger car stuff got swapped with Corvette parts because they were the same or so close that substitution was easy. My 1960 parts book shows only one part number for the driveshaft on Corvette V8s from '55-'60. Probably even up to '62 but like I said it's a 1960 manual.

Thanks for the info on the transmission swap.

There is a Muncie on e-bay right now with a #3841435. Can anyone identify what this is from??

What's the auction number? No Muncie has ever used the number 3841435 either as any component casting number or as a transmission assembly number.
