just for kicks and giggles, if my 4l60e was to need replacing in my 92 lt1, would any 4l60e bolt right in and work as long as i use my vette torque converter? and if not, which ones will? im assuming fbodies are the same as my vette? im just curious

All 4L60E's are the same as far as hard parts go goes. The Vette one has different calibrations; shift points ,etc.
You could use any trans but have to swap over the tailshaft housing as that is unique to a C4 because it has the mount for the C beam on it .Some have had to trim 3/4" off the output shaft because the Vette trans has shorter shaft

so lets say i get one from a caprice and change the tail section at that point how would i set the shift points to that of the vet? or would me ecm do it on its own?

Be careful

The 4L60E is for 94 and later the E designation refers to it being an electronic shift which came into effect with the OBD2 system. Prior to that the transmission was an 4L60 no E. Some might refer to this as the 700r4 transmission. The shift points for the 4L60 are controlled by cables from the ASR.

You have me wondering,as far as the main case and innards , is the 4L60E the same as in my 95 GMC ?
Been told it is a one yr trans.

First lets look at the 4L60 for example. When a new design is developed it will have a common name for that design such as 4L60. This is just the design version from there each nameplate (Chevy,Pontiac,Olds, etc,) that used that unit in it's lineup will assign there own unique part number to each application they use it in during that model year.(Impala,Caprice,Corvette,Blazer) Again the power train engineering department will specify different operating parameters for each application. So when they changed the 4L60 from a mechanical shifter to an electronic shifter they added the E to the design designation and all new part numbers and parameters were generated by the end users. Does this mean that you can't put the unit from a Caprice in a Corvette if all the external factors were the same. Of course not but it does mean for example that the Caprice unit will shift slower and have more lag to create smoother shifts whereas the Corvette unit will have crisp and no lag shifts. I hope this will clarify why it probable is not a good idea to swap and switch units from different donors. Again I will say that you might be able to use a Camaro unit in a Trans Am since they had the same basic performance parameters.

If the output shaft is a different length on a Y-car 4L60E, then the statement above about hard parts all being the same is incorrect.

I'll also hazard a guess that a 4L60E used in a later C4 may not have the same "hard parts" in it as a 4L60E used in a four-cylinder, 2WD S10 pickup. Again, I'm guessing and what we really need is "Vetteoz" to give us a few more facts that support the statement that the guts of 4L60E's are all the same.
