Hey guys,

I just started using my RX65 radar detector in my '76. It seems that every time I rev the engine up past a certain point, it sends a hi voltage warning to the detector. I phoned the people at Beltronics and was told that it sounds like there is a problem with the cigarette outlet. What do you guys think? How can this be checked and fixed?

You could try to hook up a voltmeter to the cigarette lighter. I don't think that it should see more then 12V. Other then that I dont know how you would check it.

How does your radar detector work in other cars?

It works fine in other vehicles. Used it in plenty and have never seen this Hi Volt warning until I put it in the Vette.

You should try hooking up a voltmeter to the battery while you run it and "rev" it and see what voltage you get (usually under a load I see about 14V in my vette). Then just test your cigarette lighter and see what results you get.

Try moving the radar detector to another location in the car. It may be an electronic noise problem. (?) a guess.

Another option

I have wired all our cars with the male DC plug up by the rear view mirror with direct 12v supply, (fused of course), and just swap the detector between the cars as required.
Keeps the lighter unit free, guaranteed to receive the 12v DC current and looks a lot tidier than the curly cord hanging around, and which also somehow always gets in the way of other things.

Just my $0.02 worth
