I'm sure this has been asked before but.......
Just put a new HD radiator and high flow water pump in my 84 and was wonder what the best mixture on antifreeze I should put back in? Summer driving mostly, except for those dry clean road winter days. Anybody use the red stuff? Comments and suggestions please.

One can use up to 70%, I believe. Anti-freeze/coolant also contols corrosion, and aluminum is a coolant killer! I recall back in 1985 my dad bought a new Eldorado, and after a couple of years the stuff was BLACK! Buy a siphon tester and draw a little sample.

Page 98 of the Haynes manual says at least 50 percent, but no more than 70 percent.

DO NOT use Dexcool (The red stuff) you totally have the wrong system for it. (Made for GM Late 90's+)

As for the coolant half and half is always a good measure. If you buy one jug you should end up with two.

Rule Of Thumb

Unless you're running a modified engine and have cooling issues, a 50-50 mix is standard and almost always used.;)

I use a mix of 50/50 - Prestone and distilled water.
:w :Steer

I Forgot

As Interceptor430 said, I ALWAYS use distilled water;)

I run 70/30 water/antifreeze in summer 50/50 in winter but I don't have winter anymore:cool
70/30 mix made a huge difference in FL heat.

I don't know if you guys have seen it out in the stores yet, but I recently came across a product that is already a 50/50 mix and ready to pour right from the bottle. I believe that it's made by Prestone. I thought it was an interesting idea...

Yea, it's in the stores around here too....I don't remember exactly the price of it...but I do remember seeing it and thinking 'Wow, that's rather pricey'!

Maybe it's just another 'convenience' high profit item?
Yea...take the regular stuff, dilute it with water, and sell it for
near full price of the concentrate?

JMHO

Yes, I think you are right. It's definitely a convenience item; I'll have to take a look at the price the next time, but I bet it's "conveniently" priced. :L

That's the problem I was having. The cooling issues were mostly on those hotter than hell days last year.

Hopefully the HF water pump and HD radiator take care of it.

What Mix would one use for max cooling?

Thanks for all the help guys

Re: Antifreeze/Coolant mix

I have always run about a 60% mixture... as well as a bottle of Water Wetter, which drops my operating temperature by about 12 degrees or more, here in our California summers....
