Another Muffler Question

I replaced the old stock type mufflers on my 1989 vert with stainless Dynomax Ultraflo's last November. I also put in a new rear Y pipe with cross piece balancer. The rumble at startup is great but I don't like the noise level when cruising or acceleration. Any suggestions regarding replacements that would keep the rumble but tame the other noise?

B&B or Corsa Powerpulse...good performance & no resonance but lacks bite in sound quality. Guess you can have one or another. My buddy's 93 had a B&B 2.5" system which gave better perf. than stock but had weak exhaust note. My 240 nissan sounded better! Look into the tuneable power effects system. You can adjust flow and I think tone on the muffler "capsule" as they call it. Might be pricey though

I don't care for Corsa or Borla (flame suit on), but they may be the ticket for you and your needs. The Corsa systems that I have heard lack bite at an idle (sound very similar to the stock system) and really only open up under a good amount of throttle. At cruise they are very quiet, and I don't care for that. I can say the same for the Borla systems that I have heard. It sounds like these qualities are what you are after, though.

I went with a chambered exhaust system and could not be happier. :J The chambered system has a nice throaty idle and an all around mean, but controlled note. It's fantastic, but based on your concerns I don't think that you would like it.

As far as replacement mufflers only, I have only heard Flowmasters (don't know the series) and they sounded very good (deep, throaty tone), but again, probably too much for you under acceleration and at cruise.

Have you considered a Corsa or Borla cat-back exhaust?

I will consider any muffler that will give me the throaty sound at idle and acceleration but not that horrible resonance at cruising speed. I guess if I were thirty years younger it wouldn't bother me as much.:crazy ;LOL

Doc,

The drawback to the Corsa and Borla systems are the cost. They start at $500 just for the pair of mufflers. I personally couldn't do that so I went with Flowmaster. I don't mind resonance but everyone is different.

I hear ya vettedoc.:crazy
I'm gonna try to get up to Ecklers Springfest in May. They'll be installing the Corsa's for $75 a pop for anyone buying them at the show. Hopefully I'll find something that works for me. I use the 85 as a daily driver so no way I can deal with the noise at cruising speed.

Thanks Edmond and Carlo. I'll stay tuned for more input and will give Flowmaster a call today.

I agree with you there. I've never minded a little resonance... It let's me know what I'm driving :)

I'm loving the Flowmaster's the more and more I drive the car, they seem to be breaking in nicely!!!!

One more thing Doc,

I would suggest welding the mufflers instead of clamping them. I realized that the clamps just don't seal them enough and I can hear a small leak from the y-pipe to the mufflers. I'm going to take care of that once the weather gets a tad warmer.

I replaced the stock exhaust with a 2 1/2" stainless system with a free flow cat and borla mufflers with dual 3" outlets. I love the sound and best part little or no resonance. Cost was a Grand....but I will never have to worry about it again especially with the Borla million mile warranty...

You might look at Power Effects exhaust, they come with a Larger Y pipe and you can tune the exhaust sounds from about stock to full open pipes.

I bought the Magnaflow mufflers and am very happy. Nice throaty sound with very minimal resonance.

I got the same system(Dynomax) and the resonance is not bad with the top down. Put the top up and you need to crank the stereo a little bit more. Overall it's not too bad.
