I need to remove the shift knob and button on my '86 auto trans coupe in order to replace the shift boot and console cover. How do I remove the knob and button?

Been there replacing the knob on the 84. If I remember right you can pop the black button of gently with a small screw driver. Now for the fun part. There is a tiny snap ring in there down at the base, you can see it with a flashlight. It takes a slender pair of snap ring pliers with small tips to get in there and release it. I had the pleasure of trying several pairs of snap ring pliers before I found the right ones. The ones that take the interchangable tips did not work for me. I ended up using a small stand alone set. After the snap ring was released the knob pulled right off. Good luck

Follow your instructions and they worked like a charm. Got knob off quickly with a standalone snap ring tool, swapped out the center console plate and added a new knob and button. Looks like new.

Thanks for the help
