I'm no expert by any means, but all the reading I've done leads me to believe the more original the car is including paint, the more it's worth.

You have to keep in mind that to be "original" you need to paint it with a lacquar.

That being said, the decision is yours! Base coat/ clear coat is much more durable, but not the original type of paint for your year.
But your the one you need to please. If you want absolute top dollar when the time comes to sell it you can always repaint it or be willing to deduct the cost of a new paint job from your asking price.

I don't know if this was any help , or if I just brought up more issues for you to think about.

btw, I painted my 68 with base coat/ clear coat and couldn't be happier. Keep in mind though that all that's original on my car is the interior and the T-Tops.:L

Enjoy your 67, drive it!!!!

Rick

Hi Herman,

I agree with Rick. It's your can and you need to be happy with it. I will add that from the collector standpoint the car should be laquer and the original color. This will affect the value of the car by at least the price of a quality paint job if a purist is looking to buy it. Less or not at all with someone just wanting a nice, mostly original '67. Red may even pull a premium from the right buyer. It's one of those depends areas. With laquer being impossible to buy and illegal to spray in some parts of the country some day this may be a non issue. I'm not sure what the points deduction is for wrong color and paint type if you were to try for NCRS or other top awards.

If you plan on keeping the car for many years and driving it regularly you could apply a modern, more durable finish now, enjoy the car, and then respray it correct when the time comes to sell.

Paint

Thanks Tom,
your site here really awsome ,,i vote for it,,
anyway you pretty much answered my question i guess
i never intend to part from this car plan to give it to my grandson
when i get finished with it in few years ,,anyway i beleive i may go back to this silver color though the more i look the better it looks to me,,i may use more update paint basecoat/clear since like you say its much more duriable...

thanks everyone
Herm

Glad to help. I like the Silver Pearl too.

LOVE the Silver Pearl!!!
I agree with the rest of the gents on choosing a color that makes you happy!

Your lucky to have such a nice orig color!
Way too many red one's out there anyway.
I had a 65 365 coupe, very orig, Rally red / red leather.
Loved the car, but the color yelled "look at me"!
Not my 1st choice, but left as it was orig.
Really like Black, or silver. Some blues are nice too.
I would go with its orig color. And I am not sure if
painting it in lacquer would add much if any value to the car.
IMHO its mainly the orig color that counts.
(But I do like lacquer)
Just my 2 cents!

My 64 was a white car but had already been redone very red before I bought it 3 years ago. I love it red and really prefer red over the original white. I figure it is your Vette and you should do what ever makes you happy. It can always be repainted original in the future. If it is value that concerns you....Yes...original color/paint does increase value. But to do it right really costs bigger bucks. Just my thoughts...Kerry

I too would go with the silver pearl. As far as laquer vs. single stage or BC/CC remember in order to be correct the paint needs to APPEAR to be lacquer not necessarily painted in laquer. Enjoy your car.

I happen to LOVE the silver color. And would also recomend going to silver. This from a fellow who purchased my car with a perfect recent red paint job to return it to it original color yellow

SBR is right it only needs to appear to be lacquer. Many painters know how to make the modern paints look like lacquer.

I have some real first hand knowledge about this one. :) Have a close friend of 25+ years. He has owned his 67 nearly that long. It's been painted a medium blue since he owned the car. The car was coded silver pearl with a teal interior.

Came time to repaint it last year. He LOVED the blue, but was torn with the originality issue. After being beaten about the head and neck for months by his friends, he decided to paint it the original silver pearl. The result???? The car is STUNNING with the original teal interior. He did it in BC/CC. He is as happy as a clam with it, and doesn't regret changing back to the original color.

Another aside.....had his car judged for the first time at a NCRS meet. Took a high "second flight", but took NO hits on the paint. The fellow that painted it did a great job.

Why a high second flight and not a top flight? He has non factory installed side exhausts on the car, which is a big hit...and also some other minor issues like tires and battery, etc., which add up to a rather large point hit. If he did a few minor things, he could easily top flight this car. It's a 327/300 4 speed roadster.....with a TEAL convertible top. Chuck
