HAVE READ MANY ARTICALS ON BOLT ON ITEMS BUT WHATS BEST FOR SB350.I HAVE STANDARD TOOLS IN MY SHOP AND AVERAGE KNOWLEDGE WITH MECHANICS.LOOKING FOR CARBS, MANIFOLDS, IGNITION AND HEADS AS A LAST MOVE. THIS SITE SEEMS MORE QUALIFIED THAN OTHERS. LET ER RIP!!!!!!

Cruiser,
air flow equals power. the best bang for the buck would be exhaust, intake manifold, HEI style distributor, cam, heads and then compression ratio. this is assuming that your lower end is in good shape. if you decide to rebuild the lower end and up the compression, you can get away with 10.5 to 1 if and ONLY IF you run aluminum heads. Dynomax makes a good header/dual-pipe/ultraflow muffler combo that fits and performs well, about $600 for the system. intake manifolds are about $200, as well as distributors with tuning kits. and heads run from $500/pr for iron, up to $1800 for nice race alumies. if you are going for a nice 350/350, you can run just about any head out there, but if you want 500hp you need to run AFR or at least Brodix along with a new lower end. i would not do a head upgrade, unless the lower end is at least 95% perfect, you will be wasting time and cash.
i would run a Weiand dual plane intake, Dynomax exhaust system, maybe a cam change, and a MSD distributor with your Q-jet. pricing shoud be around $1200 for everything and the difference will be noticable. have fun tinkering, Brian

This is such a common topic, and there is no right answer.

We need to know your current specs, ie, trans, rear gear, current mods, and desired results. Finally, what is your budget?

Nitrous comes to mind right off the bat for the best bang for the bolt on buck. However, you may be after all the time, off idle power. If so, you really should take a global view so that any mod you do now has a role to play down the road. In other words, match your parts as you go if you can't do it all now.

Brian gave you some great ideas, and I second everything he said.

BTW, please unlock you cap locks in future posts. Some people feel that is "shouting" over the net.

Thanks, and Welcome to CAC.

Bang

Thanks!!!! needed a place to start. Sounds like i'll start with carb, manifold and head south!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shouting

OOPS. sorry bout that shoutin thing. old war wound!!!!!!

If it was my car first thing is the free flowing exhaust system. Next would be an Edelbrock performer intake with the original QJet properly rebuilt. Hei Style Distributor is a must. I used an accel HEI in a 74 with excellent results. It was 130 bucks without coil but came with 3 different advance weight springs. Make sure you power it by a 12 volt wire and not the original coil power wire. 160 Thermostat is always a help on a shark. Next would be a deeper rear gear if you have "hiway gears". If u wanna cruise on the hiway I would say 3.36's with 225/70R15 tires which are 27.4 inches in diameter. Next and probably last thing if u are not gonna rebuild motor is a cam kit. Something like the Summit 204/214 Duration Cam with lifters and new timing chain and gears and valve springs. Hope this helps.
