C2 - approximating build date from VIN

In reading posts here, I come across threads where members seem to connect their car's VIN number to a build month. Is there a way to figure the build month from the sequence number in the VIN? Is it... 23,452 cars built in 1965, thats 1954 per month, so car number 19,875 (guess who's car that would be) was built in month 10? Did GM build to plant capacity, or to some forecast? Was sequence number 100001 built in January? Are these dumb questions? Are the answers to this and other such trivia in the NCRS publication catalog? I am waiting for my membership packet to show up in the mail - and when it does I'm starting my Christmas list.

There books will tell you what month your car was made by telling you either the first or last serial number of the month. Don't remember which. My coupe was born in June '67
