I am looking to replace cam in my 72 vette 350 (base engine) 4 speed, which I have since added intermediate heads, edelbrock performer manifold,3.7 gears.I would like to keep stock pistons ( money issue) and looked at putting in l46 cam ( 350-350hp) hydraulic. they say this cam has good hp, and good torque, and mild idle.Any info on this is appreciated, thanks Bob.

The L-46 cam is a good choice - zero-maintenance and dead-reliable, as it uses all stock valvetrain components, including valve springs; all you need is the cam and lifters. :)

I went the Sealed Power Performance Cam (aka TRW or SpeedPro). Stock # CS1062R with a duration of 220/231, Lobe Sep 110, Lift .468/.480 is close to the stock cam for the L46. I swapped my Edelbrock Performer RPM camshaft for the one from Sealed Power. I am totally satisfied with this cam --- very powerful.

Northern Auto Parts has it for less than $90. They also have the tappets, locks, and springs. Here's a link: http://www.northernautoparts.com/ProductModelDetail.cfm?ProductModelId=4239

Good luck.

The L46 cam (same as the L82 cam) was a great cam in its day, but much better grinds are available today. Call one of the major cam producers and tell them what you have and see what they recommend.

tom...

Bob, you are going to get a lot of different feedback on Cam Selection. As Tom suggested, ask various vendors what they recommend. Took me a long time to narrow down and decide what I wanted.

This cam does well, not too radical. Here's a short video clip: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2385512853798895567

Works for me, anyway.

I never noticed. I was too busy looking at both of your classics...

Ralph,

Video wouldn't play for me but I looked at your home page, what a great job you did. Beautiful car, congratulations:beer

Ralph I'm having trouble viewing the video link, it keeps loading thats all it does. Any suggestions?

Thanks also for the info about the cam, as well as everyone else who responded, I'll be looking into this. It's at the garage getting a new birdcage put in.

thanks Bob :w

Bob,

Birdcage repairs are serious. Could you possibly take photos? I would -- and I'm sure others would appreciate seeing the process of this repair.

Thanks.

Ralph, I'm having it done by a shop here that specializes in corvettes, and I asked him to take pictures, and as soon as I get it back I will show the pics. I'm having new rocker channels put in and a new one piece windshield frame welded on 3 sides of the side rails so I don't have to take off front clip just below the dash, but above the cowl . Expensive repair, but car is in very good condition with alot of upgrades otherwise. What alot of covette owners don't realize is that they put alot of money in these cars and I'm sure there are some show cars out there as well that have rotted birdcages because it is overlooked or because of cost.
