charging problem

I have a 78 L 82 four speed . I put a new battery in it a few weeks ago, the problem is I notice that the gen light was on and the gauge was only reading about 12 amps when I rev it up it would go up to 13 amps, so is it the battery or the alternator, I have own the vette for about 15 yearss I put a new one on it back then. Can they check the alternator on the car ? thanks for the help The old battery was difinetly bad

An old method of checking the alternator is to remove a battery cable from a battery terminal while the car is idling. if it dies when the cable is removed then it isn't getting enough juice from the alt to run so the alternator is bad, the car was running off battery juice alone. if it runs then it may be ok.
