What kind of trees are the 2 marked in red? Pines? I've never been too fond of the pines we have down here in the south. Chop 'em down! :L

Yep, Eastern White Pine.

I'm still laughing at all the other remarks. I'm starting to get the idea here. When you can't get no lovin', retreat to the man-sanctuary ;)

Tammy

You just gave me a great idea, Tammy. I need a name for over the door of the garage / men's hangout. Anyplace with a beer fridge and a funnel stuck through the outside wall has gotta qualify as a men's hangout. ;)

I like your "Men's Sanctuary". Anyone have another idea? :gap

There's Only One

"He Man Woman Haters Club" from the Little Rascals. The official high sign is also a must during all meetings.;)

Names:

Paradise.... Utopia....

Rehab... as in "Hey, I gotta go to Rehab"... There's a great name for a bar, right? " Where ya been? Rehab.... :L

Bob's Dugout... Bob's Place.... The Pearly Gates (in honor of 67 Heaven)

OK, I think that's all I can do for a Saturday morning....

it's going to be a big building so it needs a big name

Bob's bullsh*tin' burnout beer swillin' man palace
or

because we're always working on our cars how about
The Busted Knuckle Inn

My nieghbor has a great shop, and he named it "ASS HOLES GARAGE" Ass Holes only
I asked about the name and he said when his "other half" gets mad at him she refers to him as an Ass Hole... thus the name of his garage... ;LOL

Bud

Of Course the obvious would be:

Heaven*

For a sign use a scrolling Marguee hooked to you shop computer. Change the sign depending on expected visitors. Then you got em all covered.:D

For heat , look into the radiant type. Many are made with burners in tubes with reflectors. They burn outside air so paint and oil fumes won't bother them, very efficient. They heat the floor rather than the air, the only drawback is it don't heat the floor under a car.

I think Glenn is talking about the old pipes in the concrete kind of radiant heating. If you use vapour barrier and insulation under the concrete, you get pretty efficient heating in the winter.

There's also the summertime cooling issue as well. Maybe you should look at a geothermal heat pump which gives both functions?

Okay, so now that the garage is approaching the $100,000 mark....... ;LOL

It's your money I'm spending, right? :L

One of my coworkers is building a cottage and he's using the lake for his geothermal source.

What you see on that site is what I was refering to. There are diff companies that make variations of that kind of heater. When I worked for an LP gas company in the 70s we were installing them already at that time. They have only gotten better. They are also installed in the plant where I work. Everything in the reflective area is warm to the touch. The burners are usually small and the longer the pipe the more effecient they are. Some really good quality units use stainless steel tubing for long life.

personally I would go with the in-floor hydronic heating. your floor stays dry and is comfortable to work on. your heat is even and system is efficient. you can go with an electric boiler(basically a mini hot water tank) or gas fired unit but this needs to be off the ground when in a garage because of fumes, 6' if I remember right. this would allow you to heat your potable water with the same unit if you choose.

Ooh Mac, I like the geothermal idea you could switch the house over so its not a garage expense, and since its not our money let's not forget the air conditioner and humidity controls.

Hey Bob a $100,000 isn't bad considering this thread started by wanting to save a tree or two. that's only like $89,000 american. haha

If you want a dry, warm floor with zero moisture migration, do what I did - lay a 10-mil poly (Visqueen) moisture barrier down first, cover with 5/8"-thick 4'x8' sheets of high-density closed-cell foam with heavy foil on both sides, then do your mesh and slab over it. This will also guarantee a "forever" epoxy floor if you choose to do that; moisture migration will screw up any attempt at coating the floor.
