Custom Muffler?

1995 Coupe, Torch Red, 6-speed, chrome sawblades
I have a stock '95 coupe, and the exhaust is pretty tame. My local mechanic, who does a lot of custom exhaust work, wants to cut off the stock mufflers, put in Flowmaster Delta-Flow 40's (which he stocks) and put my original tips back on.

He is going to try to polish everything up, but if it doesn't look good he is going to paint like the stock mufflers.

Charge seems reasonable at $300 for all.

Opinions?

I am a bit worried about the Flowmasters, though. I just want a little more subtle rumble at idle and a mild roar crankin' it - I am worried that this system will be louder than that.

Put it this way, the 40 series is pretty loud. I do receive compliments on mine all the time. ;)

I run 'em and love 'em, but be prepared for resonance -- bad resonance at around two grand.
 
Thanks Ken. But I have heard that the Delta Flow version has very much reduced resonance because of changed internal baffling. My guy has them on his Buick (!) and he says the resonance is not bad.

Buicks and C4 coupes are worlds apart. The C4 (both coupe and convertible, but the coupe is supposedly worse than the convertible) is notorious for it's resonance problems. ;)
 
I agree with Ken, I have 40 series Flowmasters and they sound great and turn heads when you go by. Deep rumble at idle. However, the resonance inside the car is very loud at low RMP's.

Don't confuse series 40 with Flowmaster 50's. Big difference from what I HEAR.

they were too loud for me. If noise and rumble is what you are looking for, Flowmasters are for you.

I had my fun with them...every car alarm in parking lots were activated!! :L
 
I lose a LOT of the resonance with the glass top stowed back there.

I am going to sound insulate the car for all those exterior noises, as soon as I decide which product to use.

I was told the flat sides of the Flowmaster vibrate, right up into that cavity between the rear bumper and the back interior wall. It makes a nice resonance chamber, but other oft-reputed-to-be-quieter aftermarket mufflers are see-through and are louder through their output pipes.
 
So, I think I hear a general concensus here - NO!!!!

What are my options, then? Maybe I should just drop the current system and repaint the mufflers and tips?

Magnaflow

I'd recommend the Magnaflow. You can get them from performancepeddler.com for less than $350 shipped (as long as you call them!) Sound/look great and very little resonance. See Blu By U's exhaust thread. He just had his put on and he loves 'em. Nice deep sound yet the wife will still get in the car w/ you and the neighbors will remain friendly. :)
 
I have Dynomax on mine, they look just like factory mufflers and tips. The have some rumble but not as much like Magnaflow nor Flowmasters, they are quiet:w

Thanks for all the good input. Unfortunately, the project is now moot.

I had taken my pride and joy in for a couple of other things (BTW, very happy with the KYB shocks) including a mis-reading gas gauge. The gauge moved, but read off - full=full, 1/2 tank read 3/4 and empty was about 1/2 on the meter.

We were pretty sure it was the sender, and he confirmed that.

Well, I should have checked out the sender price. Ecklers has them for $300, and the price my guy paid was even more. I really could have lived with it the way it was.

Anyhow, there goes my exhaust system money...

For future reference, the Flowmaster 40's are louder than the 50's. If you get hold of a parts catalog from a company like Jeg's, it has info about the different design, noise, etc.
 
Well, actually, its in pretty good shape, considering.

The exterior is really great, interior a bit more worn but still in good shape. Everything works, except as noted below. Motor is strong.

But I have had to do:
- shocks
- rebuilt clutch master cylinder
- new front air dams on order
- tires

and, of course, the expensive fuel gauge. But, given its age, not too bad.

What "tnovot" said above is correct. 40's are 2 chamber and the 50's are 3 chamber hence the 40's are quite a bit louder.

Flowmaster's Delta Flow mufflers were...
Developed from Flowmaster's line of Delta Force® race mufflers, Delta Flow® technology provides superior scavenging of exhaust gases even over a comparable (standard) Flowmaster muffler. Please add an opinion on using muffler eliminators such as Mid-America 616-966, or Ecklers 36993.
I would like to keep the stock Rectangular tips.
