Driver wrecks car, tries to report it stolen

by Wes Mayer
The Newnan Times-Herald

Newnan, GA -- A man was arrested Thursday night after wrecking his car, fleeing the scene and attempting to report the car as stolen.

Officer Edward Lee with the Newnan Police Department responded to a car accident at the Applebee's on Bullsboro Drive around 10:30 p.m., and found a red 2008 Chevrolet Corvette wrecked in the restaurant's back parking lot.

Witnesses told Lee a man left La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant spinning his tires and lost control of his vehicle speeding on Diplomat Parkway. The Corvette ran over the curb into the Applebee's parking lot and into an employee's vehicle, pushing it into another employee's vehicle. Witnesses told officers when the driver was helped out of his Corvette, he immediately took off on foot and ran back inside La Hacienda.

While Lee spoke to witnesses, Officer Scott Kilgore responded to a 911 call from La Hacienda in reference to a stolen car. Inside the restaurant, Kilgore found that Fred Steve Young, 62, had made the call, and Kilgore asked him to step outside. Witnesses identified Young as the driver of the Corvette, and Young was placed in handcuffs.

Unfortunately, this kind of stuff happens far too often. Not much wonder insurance rates are ridiculously high.

The son of a buddy of mine took his 4X4 offroading, got stuck and burned out the transmission trying to work his way out. Rather than walking out and getting help, he decided to report the truck as stolen... and to cover his tracks, he poured gasoline inside and burned the vehicle. Eventually, he admitted what happened and got charged with false reporting fraud.
