DynaSpark

As I had both a leaking water pump and a Service light lit giving me a code the Chevrolet folks said was the distributor, I decided to get the DS. They claim to have improved their unit far beyond the OEM Opti and I had the money. Well, after having the distributor and water pump replaced, the service engine light would not clear. They said that some "drivers" were likely shorted in the ECM. Great news, not. I got a used replacement from salvage and that cleared the problem.

Did I need a new distributor? I don't know. The car doesn't seem to run any better (acceleration, idle, etc.) but it never ran bad with the light on. It would simply hitch once in awhile, like a single dead miss. Fast, fast, fast. If you have the money and know you need a distributor, you may as well go with the DS. Everything I've read about the Opti is bad for the 1992.

I just installed a DynaSpark on my 96 LT4 as part of a water pump job. Funny thing is that I was in Indiana a few weeks ago and did dyno runs at Dynotech Engineering. The Dynaspark has a billet base and comes with new vent lines and a pigtail that hooks up to the ignition control connector, which in the 96 is under the right side fuel injector rail cover. Phil Rickard at Dynatech explained that he used his experience during his previous job at Lingenfelter, where he talked with a GM ignition guy who explained the OptiSpark's weak points. In developing the DynaSpark, Phil's objective was to eliminate these weaknesses. I also installed new NGK plugs and Magnecore wires. I've only had it back together for a couple of days, so it's too early to tell the difference. My first impression is that it's running a lot stronger off the line than it did with the old setup.

A half of a year later he finally gets responses! I wonder if he's still watching this thread, or even remembers it. :L

I didn't think it would hurt anything. I posted the message as much to help future forum users as I did to help Greg. I like to check back for "old" threads anytime I can't find a current thread of interest.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I was just making a funny. :L

Thanks for keeping us in mind and providing that information! :CAC

I don't think the performance is as much the issue as durability. The dyno-tech unit is better constructed and looks like it is more water-proof only time will tell. Rack up the miles on that Gran-Sport and then report back. :L

the dyno-tech unit is the red billet one while GMs is a casting

I'm still paying attention. While I'm at it, anybody know where I can get a reasonably priced FX3 shock actuator?
