When I had my '88 coupe inspected in April, the mechanic noted a bearing-like noise under the hood. The noise is now more pronounced. What am I dealing with? :confused

Remove the belt & turn the pulleys to feel for any roughness or loosen. If that doesn't work, put the belt back on, start engine & take a long screw driver & place the tip on the component while putting the handle to your ear. You should hear it pretty good that way.

yep...you'll find the air pump or the water pump has a rough spot as they rotate...

The engine stetiscope works...but for safety,. I use a section of heater hose. Stick one end on the part, the other in your ear. Its easier to remove than a screwdriver if the belt slaps it..:chuckle
I use that to listen to inject ors, valve lash...pully bearings. You'd be amazed at how well this method works.

Good question. It's tough to diagnose engine noises via the web.

Open the hood, start the engine, let it warm then listen to various parts.

I' listen closely to the drive belt tensioner, the AIR pump and the alternator. Mentioned earlier was an automotive stethoscope...I buy one. It makes noise detection far easier.

Does the noise increase with RPM's? How is your oil pressure? Has there been any noticeable change in psi?

Another tip: check the serpentine belt for mising spots of ribs. This normally happens if the belt replacement is over due. This will create a loud noise that can be misstaken as worn out bearings.

worth mentioning....

like Hib said, the tensioner itself can make all sort of noise. I currently have one that squeels like a worn out water pump or altenator bearing, when its actually the tensioner pivot bushing, not the tensioner pulley. The minimal movement of that pivot sounds like a belt slipping or worse.
WD-40 won;t fix it either..
