Hey,

Just re-reading some of the probs we all have had with our auto climate controls..
ie. buttons not working, erratic behavior of hte settings, or general fussy-ness of the unit.

Did most of you who just replaced the head unit (brain and controls) find that that fixed it?

Or did you search further and decide it was a vac line problem?

or otherwise?

Thanks for the followups!

Anyone?

I am guessing that no one was able to get their AC working right and are afraid to talk about it. hmmmm :eyerole

Thanks
Rain

Heater A/C Head Unit

My compressor ran all the time (standard control, not automatic temp). Traced the problem to a shorted transistor in the 'head'
Replaced transistor with a Radio Shack generic switching transistor and now works fine (compressor does not run in 'vent' 'heat' or 'off' but does in A/C, bilevel, recirc and defrost).

Its frustrating.
Crank her up. Might be able to get something to activate and get a light on the Climate Control within the first mile of driving.
(usually its wide open vent or something)

Then after another couple miles, another directional button will work. And you might be able to get the temp. down some.
But, by this time, the windshield is fogging up due to the super cold air its putting out.(no matter what is selected, air is also directed at the windshield).

Tonight it took a good half hour of driving before the head unit started responding to ANY command, on demand.

Think Im in the market for a new Climate Control unit? OR is this Vac. line leakage?
or both???

Thanks for any help!

When I bought mine the vents were stuck on defrost/floor.
I found a broken vacumm check valve in the engine compartment.

This solved the vent problem and just happened to fix the cruise at the same time !

I also had funky controls. One day this worked, the next day that worked.
I tore the control unit apart, sprayed down all the contacts with contact cleaner. This solve that problem.

All works great now !!

P.S.
Not sure if this is normal but the first hot day this year I tried to use the AC I set it to dash vents and got hot air. I checked the temp setting, figured I had to drive it a bit. Then I figured it was broke again. One last try was to hit "auto", sure as sh1t it worked. So I'm not sure if the AC only works in the auto mode?

The problem I was having with my 96 was that the buttons would not respond properly when selected. This problem was always intermittent. Sometimes they would respond sometimes they would be "Stuck" in the position last set in. The Heat and A/C would work once I could get the the system in the right mode. I replaced the dash control unit only,(the part with the temp, display) with a used part and this totally fixed the problem. You may be able to fix your unit by taking it all apart and cleaning and slightly bending the pin contacts inside the unit and also the ones that connect the front panel to the body of the unit. They all seemed very loose fitting. I never tried the original unit to see if that fixed it because I had already installed the replacement one. My guess it did fix it. Buy contact and switch cleaner in a spray can at Radio Shack then use a Q tip to further clean the pins. Don't forget to very slightly bend all the pins in one direction so better contact is made when re inserted. It's worth the try IMO. You may have to purchase at Radio Shack a special little electronic tool kit with tiny socket drivers because some of the nut heads are tiny to unscrew. Also be careful removing the Dash/console faceplates they are delecate.

Here is a How To that looks good, let us know if it helps you.

From somewhere in the south of France, via PCAnywhere and Vodafone. My parents were right; I really am the person they warned me about. I spent the money I had put away for the liver x-plant on more French wine. They pump the quality stuff out of gas pumps into what ever you’ve got to put it in. 1.20€ / Lt. for really good Margaux.

Hey Rain, I’ll trade you some wine for a few soft-shell crabs. No problem getting Crawfish in France but their ain´t no soft-shell crabs north of I-10 or east of I-65.

BTW Did I mention the fact that this week-long Lemans party is WORK and therefore tax deductible?
:beer :Silly :booty :drink :Twist :_rock :bar :m

South of France.. Bet its wild!
No soft shell crab? What a shame!!!

Funny as hell - to tell ya how close I live to the beach/gulf, ive caught 2 three inch crabs in my house last night when I got home! hahaha

Feasted on fresh Mahi Mahi last night. yummm!
and Jumbo shrimp can be found for nearly 2$ a pound at some stands and outlets.. most are closer to 3$ though.. still a DEAL!
Poor shrimpers, market is so low, they arent gonna see the profits they have in the past.
Unless we get a Gump Style hurricane thru here (fingers crossed against that one)

Will check out that link you posted.

Gonna search up at this local vette graveyard I just learned about here on the MS Gulf Coast.
See if I can find a head unit (brain) for this vette climate control.

Had started looking into what it was gonna take to get the dash off, and the old one out of there. Think Im gonna call a mechanic buddy on this one! haha
but always helps being informed!!!

(knowledge is power)

Thanks to all you guys for the followups and advice!

ciao

What should a used one cost?

Just wondering ,
what should I pay for a used unit?

Thanks Yall
Rain

I want to say I paid about $80.00 for the used push button electronic head. MUCH LESS then what the dealer wanted for a factory rebuilt one. Call or e mail www.vette2vette.com They are really nice people and they ship all over. They even have the parts marked as to what model and year it was taken out of, and they warranty everything to work.

Thanks Ross,
then I dont feel bad for buying a used one tonight for 50$. Have a local vette friend who will help me get the dash off and swap the units. See if this is my "quick fix".

Thanks for ALL of your help my friend,
Rain

You are very welcome, Do you know this is an operational unit (I hope)

He stated that it was operational when it was removed from the vette.
Will know when it comes in - ;)

thanks again,
Rain

Does the C68 ECC system go for the "93" as well? The information from the link was wonderful. I have had problems that were corrected form cleaning the connecting pins. Never know when the problem could be more serious though....again....great link!
