Where is the fuel filter located in an 86 L98? Its not in the gas tank i hope. Is it hard to get in/out? Does fuel spray all over your face when you take it out? haha

Thanks

Jack up the fron of the car ..... its on the right side just behind the wheel. I believe there is a access panel under the car that covers it. just follow the fuel lines up to it .....

If it's like my '85, follow the fuel lines to just back behind passanger side front tire. You will want to relieve the fuel pressure before you take it out.

isn't that what I just said ????? to relieve the pressure pull the fuse for the fuel pump and start it let it run till it dies then your safe

There's no panel or anything covering it, though it's tucked above and inside the frame rail. You can see/feel it with the car still on the ground.

Warning: Make sure what you're removing is actually the fuel filter! There was a service bulletin for cars of our year(s) where GM put a sort-of resonance eliminator on the line going BACK to the tank because of clicking/groaning noises on cold starts. The module they used looks like a smaller fuel filter. Not all cars will have this, because it was a service bulletin, not a recall.

When I first encountered the second filter, it had me as well as a few others scratching our heads. One mechanic said he had seen them on C4 Corvettes before, but his employer said he hadn't, nor had my mechanic.

It wasn't long though before I found the reason for the second filter on the return line.
  • Service Bulletin Number: 86234
Component: Fuel: Fuel Injection: Unknown type: Accumulator
Summary: Fuel return pipe rattle/knock-hammering/knocking type noise -- Caused by pressure pulsatings in fuel system generated by fuel injector operation. -- Repaired by installation of a filter/accumulator assembly in fuel return system. -- Service kits containing parts available from GMSPO - Service Kit P/N - Coupe 10068791 - Convertible 10068797 - All 1985-86 Chevrolet Corvette models.

Evidently someone had the same problem with my '87.

Pictures! The fuel feed line filter is on the lower right, the return line has the second canister-type filter, pictured on the upper left.
