Gear drive and Knock sensors

I was thinking about being loud and installing a Pete Jackson Noisy. Problem is, as you all probably know, the knock sensor. Now, is there a way to just bypass the knock sensor without adverse effects or should I just stick with a double roller or a "Quiet" type gear drive?

Actually I just want a supercharger sound.:gap

Geeze... no takers? I would have figured someone would have an idea on this!

Hi there,
Honestly, there are 2 forms of gear drive available for your L83.
Quiet, and noisy. If you go for the quiet, you will have no problem.
Noisy only really give problems, if there is excessive lash, and the cam gears slap together, which can happen from time to time.
Your knock sensors should be torqued to 14 ft lbs, with a little teflon tape, NOT the sealant form.
Other than that, you should do fine.
Allthebest, c4c5:hb

Do the quiets have any sort of whine to them?

Its like I am painting stripes on my cat and calling him a tiger.:D

I have a gear drive in my 75 and I can't think of any reason anyone would want one. If I ever have to take it apart the gear drive will be the first to go. I hate the whine.

Would Sir enjoy a little cheese with his whine?

...actually, I am hoping it will be a detterent to would-be racers. I would rather psyche them all out before I kill my car trying to beat the off the line. After 97k, methinks I will take it easy on her.... till I get my Z06.

Yep, you can install a resistor in the wiring that leads from the sensor to the module on the passenger side engine compartment. The resistor fools the ECM when it does it's self test into thinking that all is well, but will effectively prevent ignition retard; EVEN IF ACTUAL DETONATION IS PRESENT!

Gotta use this trick carefully because of the potential of engine damage IF your engine actually begins to detonate.

I did it to mine early last year and verified that it works by running Diacom to monitor knock counts and timing retard.

I saved the exact resistor specs somewhere on my harddrive so if you want to tread this path, let me know and I'll try to track them down.

Also read that there is a way to make the knock sensor less sensitive by using a spark module from a different model GM car. Again, I'd have to research which one to use, but I believe it was from a "G" body.

Hope this helps.

Jake
