This is so bizarre, I just had to write and see if you have also heard about it...

... my co-worker has a '92 C4 auto. He got a letter in the mail from GM corporate, saying he had been selected from a large group of potential owners to receive an BUY BACK offer to buy his C4.

He took them up on it. Went to the dealer, sold it for $200. under blue book value. Not trade in value--private sale value, mind you.

No safety inspection was needed, either.

WHY ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH WOULD GM WANT TO BUY BACK A C4 OR C4's!!!???

how do I get in on this deal?

I assume they want the C4's for testing purposes... to see how they held up in the real world. My guess is they will be torn down to inspect every single part

Sold it for $200 UNDER blue book? I wouldn't sell mine for less than $5000.00 OVER blue book. Typically, vettes here, due to being stored in the winter, actually sell consistantly for over blue book.
I take it he was the original owner and hence easy to track down?

No, not the original owner. Bought it 3-4 years old.

He did used to be a member of a Corvette club. That is my guess.

He is maybe 50 years old and would not have driven the car at the track. Probably rare that he even drove it hard.

I think Vettelt193 is right. GM wants to check real-world wear and tear on a real car or ten so they buy a few back for the purpose.

I've heard of other car companies (BMW and Mercedes, specifically) doing this with some of their cars. I wish they'd make an offer on my ML430! :D

Hopefully GM will learn enough to make the C7 last forever! :)

Buy back!!! No!! :( An even trade for a C6. HELL YES!!!:D

I didn't get any notices! I don't think GM would want my old 92 back now anyway!!!

even trade on a C6, plus first 3 years tag in MS, and insurance for the first 2 years..
Then Im Sold.. till then, this rare aqua is staying home with us! :)

A little off the subject but what does "he is maybe 50 years old" have to do with driving a vette, I am over 50 and drive the H*** out of mine, must have just been a slip up on sothpaw's part.

I love the rare aqua..... DON'T EVER SELL IT!

I get personally attached to my cars..... too much so. That is why I have so flippin' many! :upthumbs

yea, 357 aquas, 109 with an automatic transmission..
Think I gotta hold onto this one. (I mean, It IS my first one)

And amazing enough, there are 3 aquas here on the coast!

Being a dealer for 8 years now I would love to see the "corporate letter" that "GM" sent out. Sounds like a great marketing scheme........

I am too attached to my current car. I believe that I will have it until I give it to one of my kids hopefully. As far as an even trade for a C6, it would be a tuff decision for me. My goal is to get as many toys as I can before I get married. You would think they would be in the market soon for some C5's. They are appraoching 10 years old.

Unless I change none of my kids will get it. I cringe when other people move my car let alone drive it. I guess I will just have to get them there own. Man that will suck if they like Fords :L .

GM does do this BUT only on very high milage cars that are 1 or 2 years old. if you have a 2 year old car with 200,000 miles they would be interested in it.

I just got the same letter on my 79. Nice little maketing scheme from GM to have their dealers look up Corvette owners (and other brands I'm sure) and offer to "buy back" their car because of high demand for that year! Yeah, right! There is a higher profit in used cars than new ones so your nice car is wanted whether it is a trade in or an outright buy, at less than wholesale always. So why is this letter going out? Can you spell PROFIT?

I have to disagree with that... GM can put 200k on a car in a short amount of time themselves. Putting 50k on a car over 10 years, well, simply takes time. A car with 50k over 10 years probably has an entirely different wear pattern, and set of unique problems than one that is driven every day.

I agree. I have seen these marketing things, too. It has always looked like a way to get people on the car lot.
