GM should take notice

Concerning the steering lock, my 2001 M6 came with the latest fix from the factory & was not in the Vin# range for the TSB & mine locked up & replaced with the identical parts so there is one that locked up with the fix that was put on at the factory. Answer me this if the fix is the final how come they removed them from the A4's, because they have no confidence in the fix & they legally can remove them without the feds saying anything about it since the trans still locks.

Hi there,
Steering column locks have been removed on ALL GM vehicles in the Chevrolet line, not only Corvette. Trailblazer, Tahoe, Suburban, Impala, and others. This is due to cost savings during production. It saves money for the automatics, not to have the column locking mechanism.
Yes, there have been issues, however, 37 different faults can occur on c5, to induce a locked column, not only the actuator itself.
Speculation is moot here, as I did NOT serve your car, I cannot state as to why your issue occured.

What I was trying to bring out was that the fix for 2001's & older is to disable the lock on the autos. If they felt that the current fix for the M6's is the real one then why disable the ones on the auto that are in service & have the lock. I realize the 2002 & newer from the factory the lock is deleted as a cost saving method but if the fix for the M6 is good then use them on the 2001's & older A4's. Common sense says that the fix is not since 2002's M6's are locking up. My dealer also told me like you said there are numerous faults that can cause it. But it seems GM does not have the answer to cover all faults.

TSB'S

CHECK KNOWLEDBASE ON THIS SITE. I'M NEW TO THIS FORUM AND HAVE HAD MY 2000 A4 COUPE LESS THAN A MONTH. I WAS SURPRISED TO READ AND HEAR ABOUT THE COLUMN LOCK PROBLEMS. I HAD MY VIN # CHECKED AT MY LOCAL DEALER TODAY AND IT SHOWED NO RECALLS AND NO PRIOR SERVICE PERFORMED ON MY VETTE. HE SHOWED ME A COPY OF THE GM COLUMN LOCK RECALLS THEY GO BY.SAME ONES THAT ARE LISTED ON OUR KNOWLEDGEBASE . THERE IS ALSO A CHEVROLET DEALER SERVICE BULLETIN IN THE KBASE, #01-02-35-008. HE SAID HE DID NOT HAVE OR KNOW ABOUT THIS ONE. I PERSISTED ABOUT THE REFRENCE "TO END OF PRODUCTION" AND HE FINALLY GAVE ME A CHEV. GM. CUSTOMER SERVICE #(800-222-1020). I TALKED WITH SOMEONE WHO CHECKED AND CAME BACK WITH THE SAME RECALL BULLETIN AND VIN# THE DEALER HAD. I STILL PERSISTED AND TOLD THEM I KNEW ABOUT THE INVESTIGATION BY THE NHTSA AND SHE WENT BACK AND CHECKED A LITTLE FURTHER. SHE KEPT ME ON HOLD ABOUT 20 MINUTES BUT FINALLY AGREED THERE IS A DEALER SERVICE BULLETIN THAT EFFECTS 97,98,99, AND 00 THAT ARE NOT LISTED AT THE GM DEALERS. SHE CONTACTED THE SERVICE MANAGER AT MY LOCAL DEALER AND GAVE ME A FILE #. THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED ME AND SCHEDULED ME TO BRING MY VETTE IN WEDNESDAY. I HAVE NOT HAD THE COLUMN LOCK PROBLEM BUT I DON'T WANT TO TAKE THE CHANCE OF IT HAPPENING. I DON'T THINK GM. WANTS THE RISK EITHER. THE PART ABOUT THE NHTSA PROBABLY DIDN'T HURT. SORRY ABOUT THIS BEING SO LONG. I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT.

Bama,

If you could, please unlock the cap locks key on your keyboard. When you type in all capital letters, it indicates that your mad and shouting over the web. :)

To everyone else,

All pertinent (directly related to the C5) service bulletins and campaign notices for the C5 have been entered into the Knowledgebase here at the Corvette Action Center. Click the Knowlegebase tab at the top of this page.

They are provided here for free, hence you do not have to pay for them.

Regarding the steering column lock and the rocking seat problem, there are service bulletins that address these problems. Why they cover certain model years and not others is something I do not have the answer to. I'm sure GM has their reasons. However, if your model year experiences these problems, you should immediately bring it to the attention of your dealer.

I don't know how GM determines which model years will be covered under a particular TSB, but I would assume it depends upon the number of documented cases reported at the dealer service level.
