HELP Please..........88 Code question

A friend of mine has an 88 coupe, 4spd, getting an SES light. Checked the code, it's a "36-shift fault" or something like that. I don't remember exactly how it's worded, just that it's a code 36, but not the MAF burnoff code. Anyone ever see this one and know what causes it??

That's what he told me.
I'm like you the only 36 I find is in a TPI book I have and it's a MAF burn off fault code. I'll double check with him, just to make sure.

Well I double checked with the guy with the scanner that checked this fault out for him. It was a code 36 shift fault. We're going to keep digging and see what we can figure out. Probably reset it and see if it comes back again.

I guess code 36 was used for a few different things. How are you checking the code? Are you shorting the ALDL or using some reader? If it's a reader, is it specifically for a Vette?

If your using a reader I'd try shorting out the plug and reading the light. If it still gives you the 36 replace the relay, the things don't cost that much.

The P-vin code us for the LT1 which shouldn't apply to an L98.

I just went through the same thing the other day with my 86 Automatic. I scanned my vette with my Auto X Ray scannner and got "transmission shift fault." Then I grounded the two upper right hand terminals of the under dash connector. It flashed me a CODE 36.

I then cleared the CODE 36 . CODE 36 is Mass aif flow burn off circuit. How are you pulling the code?

Complete the following.

Code 36: Check connections at MAF, MAF relay and MAF Burn off relay. Check resistance of MAF relay and MAF burnoff relay with digital Ohm meter. replace if less than 18 Ohms. Possible ECM failure.

If you do not have a digital multimeter, consider replacing the relays as they are not expensive if everything else checks well.

I found my MAF relay connections caked with s@#t. I sprayed some electronic connection cleaner spray in there, disconnected the battery for a while, and WHALA. Code 36 cleared. Hope this helps you man.

My 88 just had code 34 MAF sensor. Someone suggested, and I took their advise after pricing a MAF, replacing the MAF power relay and burn off relay. Both mounted together behind the battery. Cost me $20 and the check engine light has not came back on. The burn off relay or connections will cause code 36. Check the plugs on both relays.
