yesterday I installed a Victor Jr. intake (polished) and and a 3500 stall. It's a 70 LT-1 motor. I finally got this motor working to potential. With a 750 holly double pump, I am considerably above hood clearence. I really like this set-up, I am excited that this motor is finally "dialed-in" but I don't know what to do on the hood now, I don't do glass but I have a good glass man, and the car will soon be painted. I have seen the L-88 mini scoops (2 inches) I don't want anything radical, for sight and I don't want it to look gaudy. They are as cheap as 54 bucks from a JC Whitney type of deal. Are these total junk? Any other suggestions. Would it just be best to fork out the bucks for a new high-rise after market hood and store the original, like I have done with the factory L-82. Any other scoop or modifacation sugestions. Thanks Jon

Same Hood

I'm also running the Victor Jr. on mine and I had the same thing with my 62. Look at the picture in my signiture below on the right and you'll see what the L88 scoop looks like on a 62 hood. That scoop can be had at Eckler's and some of the other parts houses for $200. Then you have to cut your stock hood and glass the scoop in and paint it. I was VERY lucky, I had the hood off while making the manifold swap and went to a cruise night with no hood. A guy walked up and asked me where my hood was and I told him I was adding the L88 scoop to mine, and he said he had one for sale for $200 already done, and even painted white! I went the next day to look at it, bought it and put it on so I still have my stock hood in storage. Maybe you can find a hood in a salvage yard that needs work so you can cut that one and keep yours, look around, consider all your options, good luck.

That is a great idea......Keep your stock hood and find one to modify at a wrecking yard or anywhere. If you are going to paint the car anyway it's the best way. Also take your stock hood with you when you get the car painted and paint it at the same time because you never know what you are going to do next year.

Hey Rowdy, I'll still swap you straight up if you twist my arm.:L :L :L :beer

Keep Trying

I still give you an A+ for effort, but I still won't twist your arm or swap my 62.:( You don't want all that HP, it'll just get ya in trouble:L :L :L I forgot to mention in the post above, I had the scoop from Eckler's already, I called them and told them I wanted to return it and they took it back and gave me my $$ back.:)

OK guys, one more question: does anyone know if a origianl LT-1 hood will give ample clearence. It pretty mucm seems like I need about 1-3/4" Also will 68-72 hoods fit a 79? Will the hinges and cut-out be a simple bolt-on application??

That.........

I don't know but I'm sure someone in here will.

Jon,

I had the same problem when I installed a big block. I used my stock hood and had it glassed in. I didn't use J.C. Whitney. I used this other hood scoop.
I have a few pic's. It's with the L-88 scoop. Let me know if you want to see them. I know have enough to clear my demon and and a 3in K&n with a spacer. I'm gonna get a better intake now.

Yeah, the pics would be great. They seem to make (2) L-88 scoops. The larger, I assume to be a duplicate in size to the origianl L-88, Is wider than the raised (and much longer) lift that runs accross a stock 79 hood. Therefore I thought the mini L-88 scoop would be best. I don't know if it won't look to "add-on" though. Right now I am hoodless.OK when in the garage but a quick florida rain can ruin a good time, even parked...

That's It...

On my 62 by going to the full size L88 scoop, it gave me 4 1/2" more under the hood. With an Edelbrock Torker 2 and the stock hood, I was limited to a 1" air cleaner. With the L88 scoop, I now have the Victor Jr. high rise AND a 4" K&N air cleaner not to mention another nice big area for the carb to get it's air from. It definately makes the whole appearance of the car different and I get a lot of compliments and questions about it.

Lou, did you have to do any modifications to the hood/Vette to get that hood on there? Or are C1 and C3 hoods designed the same way?

Just curious, Lou, but how much HP does your Vette have? I've always wondered about C1s. And torque?

Just The Hood Swap

TR, I had bought an L88 scoop from Eckler's for $199 that I was going to have put on my stock hood. I just happened by sheer luck to be at the right place at the right time. My stock hood wasn't on the car, I had removed it to get the scoop put on and a guy asked me at a cruise if I wanted to buy a hood with the exact same scoop already fiberglassed in it, never used for $225. (Hoods from 58 to 62 are basically the same) I looked at it the next day and bought, it was even painted white. So I was able to keep my stock hood untouched, I just took the hardware off my stock hood and put it on the new hood and mounted the new hood. No mods were needed to the car, just a hood swap. I returned the unused hood scoop to Eckler's and got a refund.

As far as the HP goes I've haven't dyno tested it yet. With the engine built the way I did it, bored, higher compression, aluminum heads 64cc, lumpy solid lifter cam, roller rockers, high rise intake, porting polishing, everything matched up it should be between 400 to 425 HP. No idea what the torque is.
A stock 62 with fuel injection would produce 360 HP.;)

In answer to your LT-1 hood question, yes, it would have the clearance, but unfortunately won't fit a '79. (Remember a '68-72 has a separate w/w door and a grille in between).
crebo's hood looks fantastic! That would be a great way to go.

:eek :eek :eek Wow, Lou. I didn't even imagine. That is some Vette you have. I'm going to have a C3 as my first Vette, but my second Vette will be a C1. That's definitely what I want. That's amazing. I'm going to have to come on up to visit you, Lou, so I can feel some of that power. I can't even imagine this! :eek :eek :D

No Problem TR....

Just as soon as it warms up a bit and the salt is off the roads. I told ya I'd take you. ;) :bu :Steer

:D :Steer Sounds good, Lou. ;)

Boy, I'll tell you. My father has really fallen in love with that '78 S/A that we went to look at. He says that it's just what he was looking for. I'm telling you, that Vette was cherry.

He's thinking about offering $11k for it. If I could put in my saved $2.5k and I told him, "Dad, you wouldn't have to work on the Vette. I would do that and I will finance it, too. You won't even have to change the oil." He loves Vette, and he wants to own one and drive it. But, he doesn't really want to work on it. So, we will have a joint ownership. We both put forth for her, and I'll work on the Vette with repairs/maintainance (sp?).

So, we're still talking and thinking about this '78. This guy has had this posted for a couple of months, and it's apparent that there aren't any takers. So, hopefully he'll be a little more pliant.

Sounds Like A Plan

Excellant way for you to get your feet wet. You better make sure you do all your little things to butter up Ol' Dad dude. Good Luck.

:D Yeah, I'm working on that. I don't think it'll be too much trouble to get him going for it. The only things that I'm apprehensive about are

1) it's winter. I won't be able to drive it immediately, of course. Maybe on good days I can go down to the school lot and practice the manual. That would be fine.

2) I don't have my license yet. But, it kinda works out. When the weather turns good in May, I get my license (the 13th)! So, I guess it's all good, then.

I'll get back to you with results. ;)
