How To Defeat the 1 to 4 Skip Shift- a guide for the mechanically challenged

TwoVetteJack

Not to worry about the warranty. There's not 10 Chevy mechanics in the U.S. that would even notice the 1 to 4 bypass defeat if they were starring right at it. The 10 guys that know what it is will more than likely shake your hand.

warranty

I don't have any first hand info on this but I'll pass along some info I picked up over at z06vette.com:

1) technically, I believe GM could claim that it voids your warranty

On the other hand:
2) There are many GM dealers who will install it for you
3) There are many dealers who do not have any problem with it being there
4) if you have an anal dealer, putting the car back to stock (with CAGS not bypassed) before you bring it in for service is incredibly simple.
5) this seems to be a VERY widely used and accepted modification

I would like to hear what C4C5Specialist or Chick have to say about this. you might consider starting another thread that might get their attention. Or perhaps give your dealer a call and see what they say.

MsSchroder has it right...only at light throttle do you "see the light", so the obvious answer is to swear off light throttles.:Steer

I finally fixed the broken photo links. Just in case there is anyone still out there who hasn't done taken care of this little issue ;)

I installed mine in about 10 minutes with the aid of the lift in the auto hobby shop on base. I absolutely love being able to choose what ever gear I like.

Randy,

I was a military brat. I took for granted the access that the dependents had to the facilities such as these.

I learned to drive and work on cars at the Presidio in SF. We used to go into the auto shop, give them our ID card and in exchange we got a shower curtain ring filled with blank, colored dog tags. One of those tags would get you any tool in the place and it was outfitted like a professional shop.

Now I lay on my back under the car dreaming of these days.

Bob

Yep,

The auto hobby shop is a good thing. When I was at Spangdahlem, I could get my car on a lift to do things. However, here at Aviano, I can't get my car on any of the lifts. I have to take my car in to the mechanic to do simple things. Oh, well.

Bill,
It is a "feature" of the 6-speed transmission in corvettes and some other GM cars (camaro?) since the late 80's or early 90's (from what I understand). It occurs only under light throttle, when the engine is warm, when shifting out of 1st gear. A light will appear on the dash that says something like "1 to 4 shift" and you will be forced to select 4th gear when you shift, when actually most people prefer to shift to 2nd from 1st ;)
I'll try to look up the details later today.
Tammy
It's an economy feature to save fuel. You have to shift before the light comes on or after it goes off. If you're used to a decent rev before hitting second the selenoid won't ever lock you out. On my SnapOn engine analyzer it lists an on/off feature for the selenoid function in the cars computer. Don't know if it works but it is listed as such.

Richard.

2nd C5 and never really understood why this is an issue with most Vette owners. Good job MsSchroder on the details of the CAGS by-pass. I drive into Manhattan everyday. Traffiic can be a bit ugly, but just accelerate or let off the gas to get beyond the forced shift and I've never thought the 1-4 was a pain. Just my opinion.

Joe Vette beat me to it. Just drive the car, folks. This is not a difficult concept. If it forces you to shift you are much too timid.

Not to detract from the effort put into the above, it is just unnecessary and proper driving technique makes it a non-problem.

Cheers!

Try moseying through a huge intersection, nose to bumper, in Atlanta rush hour traffic. First gear is too torquey (I know, not a word :crazy) and 4th is too wimpy.
That was the only time it really bugged me.

It can be bothersome I admit.

I want to thank you. Your post was very informative and took all of three minutes to install a cags defeat after seeing the process in this post. Wish every add-on went this smooth.

Richard.

I did the CAGS thing almost 4 years ago before I even knew about the part you can buy...the same day I got my '95 ZF 6 speed the mechanic had my Vette on the rack changing trans fluid and he said..."watch this trick...you will have no problems now"...and I did not know what he meant until he showed me what he meant...I can not see why any Vette owner that has a 6 speed would want to suffer with that crap from 1st to fourth...makes no sense...:beer

In my urgency to see if it worked or not I couldn't recreate the conditions required to turn the light on within a short drive to check it. I'm convinced it knows when to mess with your mind.

And it would be a Southern "thang"...Virginia is just barely Southern...miss Southern hospitality...:L ...I'm a Yankee compared to you Georgia folks...:D

Received my CAGS in the mail today. Will install soon.

Thanks for the info.
